The paper contends that the English present and past are best interpreted by examining not only the propositions expressed within these tenses, but also the in-built meanings expressed by the pragmatics of the context, world knowledge and word-class combinations that underpin them. Hinging on the Relevance Theory of Communication (cf. Sperber and Wilson cited in Xinyue Yao [1], this paper concludes that the value of a proposition is essentially speaker-hearer driven. From the end of the speaker, processing communication entails knowing the topic-relevance of a speaker's utterance (message). On the whole, the complexity of the English present and past as well as incompetence in their normative properties culminate into non-pragmatic use of them in discourse.

Exploring theoretical perspectives in the literature as they apply to writing in general and literary genres in particular, this study presents tips for better teachingand invariably, learning of creative writing. In different parts of the world, the Curriculum of Creative Writing in tertiary institutions focuses on literary genres. The French word "genre" denotes "kind" and it is related to "gender" and "genus". As far back as the early nineteenth century the word has been used in English to mean "a kind of literature". The classification of literature into the three basic genres: drama, prose and poetry is based on whether or not a literary work is dialogue, narrative or verse. This study concludes that creative writing presupposes the use of writing conventions as well as individualistic creative prowess, to make the teaching of discrete skills of creative writing effective and fascinating.

In terms of lexicon, grammar and literature, Nigerian Pidgin should be extensively developed. If the language is to be effectively used as medium of instruction alongside English, translationwhich incorporates codification and standardizationis crucial. Indeed, NP should be introduced into the Certification System, so that learners will strive to attain proficiency in the language. Such proficiency will have long-term positive implications not only in terms of national cohesion and development, but also in terms of producing human resources (future competent teachers of the language in primary, secondary and tertiary institutions). Hinging on Stewart"s parameters for language classification, this study concludes that the translation of school subjects into NP and use of NP as medium of instruction in schools can culminate into improvement of its corpora so much that the language can subsequently suffice as a functional language in important facets of nation-hood and can become suitable as a National Language in future.

They constitute great obstacles to sustainable development and pose serious threats to security challenges. With her enormous human and material potentials, Nigeria ranks the 23rd poorest country in the world. To tackle the menace of poverty, hunger and unemployment, successive Nigerian governments have initiated series of poverty eradication or poverty-alleviation programmes. But these programmes, due to corruption and inefficient leadership, availed Nigerians nothing, as 61.5% of Nigerians, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), are living below $1.25 per day. Against this backdrop, this paper focuses attention on poverty and identifies Zakat, the third pillar of Islam, as a panacea for its alleviation. The paper discovers that lexical repetition, lexical collocation, synonyms, presuppositions and implicature are diverse linguistic features that are woven into t...
