The term usually implies that modern industrial and traditional agricultural economies are found in different sections of a single country. Regional dualism always means great interregional differences in productivity. The effect of these conditions is usually seen in gaps in per capita income and in levels of living between the two regions. The political unity of a country, that is to say, the concept of nationhood favors an "open economy"-one in which there are no internal trade barriers and, by and large, resources flow without restrictions. While an open economy provides many advantages to the less developed area of the country, it may often prevent the achievement of sustained economic growth. For one thing, resources tend to concentrate in the more developed region. This means that they become polarized or gravitate to those places of easier accommodation. For another, because of lack of trade barriers, higher productivity, and greater marketing sophistication, the more advanced region will find a ready outlet for its commodities (which are necessarily competitive) in the lesser developed region.

The types of vessels, their rigging and tonnage, routes and ports of call, and composition of incoming and outgoing cargos are some of the covered topics. Diplomatic relations between the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and the United States are discussed in the third and final chapter. Shipping from many states, including Great Britain, which then had a much larger Mediterranean presence, used Livorno as a base of operations. The decision to focus on American trade may not be unrelated to America's current role in the Mediterranean region. If it is true that Livorno was under 'American military control' as early as the 1840s (p. 107n), a claim that does seem extreme, the city may have anticipated what was to come. In any case, politics are not the main concern of this study. American consuls in the city, while generally sympathetic to the movement of Italian independence, were more concerned with advancing American business interests than supporting liberal causes. Di Giacomo's study consequently pays little attention to the city's role in the Risorgimento. For that aspect of the city's history one can consult David LoRomer's Merchants and Reform in Livorno, 1814-1868 (1987), and Howard R. Marraro's three-volume work L'unificazione italiana vista dai diplomatici statunitensi (1963-1967). Di Giacomo's study illuminates complementary aspects of Livorno's international role and the history of American sea trade.

The input-output approach allows an analysis based on the structural properties of the matrices representing the linkages among the different parts of the multiregional economy. The singularity of the regional matrices of capital input coefficients is realistically imposed, and the forward-in-time projection of the model is made possible by a suitable partition of the system. Moreover, the existence and relative stability of a balanced growth path are discussed under the assumption that each sector in the economy requires, directly or indirectly, either some current flow or some capital input from all the other sectors operating in the same and in the other regions. The model is applied to the Italian economy at 198.5 within a biregional framework.

We use annual input–output (IO) tables in current and constant prices to derive an aggregate index of structural change. We adopt several techniques for such an explorative analysis. First, we borrow from qualitative matrix analysis and graph theory some basic concepts to assess direct and indirect links among sectors, and interrelatedness measures are derived in a straightforward way. However, qualitative analysis of indirect links may be flawed, since it can establish a path that is quantitatively negligible. Then, we turn our attention to a non-standard quantitative index derived from structural path analysis, expressed by a simple function of the input matrix determinant. Since empirical findings indicate a structural break in 1975, we derive another measure of technical change: the dominant eigenvalue. Such an index has several interesting properties but no clear relationship to the circularity process implicit in the Leontief model. Results for constant- and actual-price IO tables are discussed and compared with main macro-economic variables over the sample. Empirical findings indicate a relationship between investment, variability in final demand and aggregate structural change.

In this study, three statistical measures of regional inequality are used: the coefficient of variation (sigma convergence), the size of relative differences between the highest and the lowest per capita output or family income region, and simple regression tests for the unconditional convergence of per capita outputs or family/median household incomes across regions of Italy and the U.S. (Beta convergence).
