The most commonly adopted frameworks for innovation among corporations are the ones based on co-creation processes, particularly the ones related to the “design thinking” practices (i.e, human-centered design, open innovation, service design, lean startup and business model generation). These frameworks have fundamentally in common the assumption that people are sensible enough to understand different points of view. And that these frames of work will enable organizational teams to free themselves of their prejudices and embrace the “different.” At the same time that a team’s prejudice can distort understandings, it also plays an important role in opening up what it is to be understood. This text advocates that by being aware of the impacts of prejudice, tradition and the interplays between pre-understandings and understandings, organizational teams should have better possibilities to innovate, i.e. to create new propositions that will be perceived as valuable by a determined social context. A metaframework and future research are proposed.

These frameworks have fundamentally in common the assumption that people are sensible enough to understand different points of view. And that these frames of work will enable organizational teams to free themselves of their prejudices and embrace the “different.” By doing that, these teams would be able to create new value propositions that, once perceived and accepted by a social context, will be considered an innovation. However, a literature review on social sciences and experiments based on the Need For Closure scale assessment indicate that the necessary empathic understanding to “pivot” one’s own view of the world is not evenly distributed on a population. Nor, that it is something simple to be done. Building on the prejudice’s definition by Hans-Georg Gadamer and the empirical data obtained from the cited experiments, this paper draws a parallel between the hermeneutical circle and the social concept of innovation. In this paper, we understand innovation as a social construction based on tradition and prejudice of a social context. Which means that it has as its central component the hermeneutical’s interplays between preunderstandings and understandings.

innovation, they strengthen the need for interaction and communication within a group, which may lead to conflict and distrust. The ability to exercise intergroup contacts is cognitively
demanding and it may present some difficulties to the individuals involved. And prejudice might be one key condition to understanding why some organisations, even if they adopt design methods and tools, do not innovate as expected by their members. With the aim of making sense of the innovation phenomenon, this document describes the pre-study of Mauricio Manhães’ doctoral research. Through a series of experiments, the relationships between the concepts of innovation, design and prejudice were contemplated. These experiments were based on workshops structured on two conceptual bases: (i) the four key conditions of intergroup contact by Allport; and (ii) the understanding of design as a hermeneutical circle. The prejudice characteristics of the participants were assessed through the concept of Need for Closure (NFC).
The investigated relationship between participants’ NFC levels and the perceived innovativeness of the resulting products by a panel of independent judges pointed to the possibility of proposing a sensemanking discourse. This can compromise organisations to act towards assessing prejudice among its members as a way of creating innovative opportunities. Although the perspective adopted for this research does not support the notion of a reified innovation phenomenon,
quantitative allegories and metaphors were used, due to the prejudices of the intended audience: members of the respective organisation. The findings of the pre-study phase of the research are presented.

This work has as the objective of analyzing two service outsourcing models developed by Brazilian electricity distribution companies. Interviews in situ with stakeholders from both companies and from the outsourcing companies were made along with visits. The main contribution is that outsourcing activities require more sophisticated management models, suggested by the need to increase technical and managerial capabilities in the firms.

The last decade has seen a growing research interest in the innovation systems of different economies in order to better understand the factors that determine their economic and social development. This paper addresses the complex industry-university relationship using as theoretical framework the NIS concepts and as an analytical method, System Dynamics (SD) which is specifically designed to evaluate complex systems. Later, some international comparisons between Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRIC) are introduced in terms of industry-university partnerships.
