The active compounds in turmeric are known as curcuminoids and their content in the rhizome varies by many factors. It is therefore important to have analytical methods to monitor the quality of the rhizome and the derived products such as curry. Here we show a simple method using 1H-‐‑ NMR as a tool for the quantification of curcuminoids in crude extracts. The preliminary results showed that the content of curcuminoids in CostaRican rhizome crops is similar to that from other regions of the world. A survey of the curcuminoids in turmeric and curry sold in local convenience stores shows that the curcumin content of turmeric is in the range shown in other studies, but that curry is close to the lower values reported in those studies. Bioinformatics analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequences assigned the isolates to 15 families and 21 genera. Streptomyces was the dominant genus while the remaining 20 genera were poorly represented. Nearly 70% of the phylotypes presented a coastal-restricted distribution whereas the other 30% were common inhabitants of both shores. The coastal tropical waters of Costa Rica showed a high diversity of actinomycetes, both in terms of the number of species and phylogenetic composition, although significant differences were observed between and within shores.

Their structures were elucidated by NMR and MS analysis.

It has been divided into four volumes: Africa, Asia, Europe and The Americas. The information compiled will encourage strategic partnerships in scientific research and business alliances.

With the aim to find new NF-B inhibitors, we purified and characterized compounds from extracts of the Fijian sponge Rhabdastrella globostellata, the crinoid Comanthus parvicirrus, the soft corals Sarcophyton sp. nov. and Sinularia sp., and the gorgonian Subergorgia sp. after an initial screening of 266 extracts from different marine origins.
