The Assessment of Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling Competencies (ACRCC) is an evaluation tool i... more The Assessment of Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling Competencies (ACRCC) is an evaluation tool intended to assess clinical rehabilitation counseling trainees’ developing competencies, specialty-specific skills, and learning outcomes. In response to the 2017 merger between the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) and the Council on Rehabilitation Education, we developed the ACRCC to align with the CACREP (2016)Standards. In our manuscript, we review (a) the developmental needs of rehabilitation counseling trainees, (b) the importance of comprehensive and specialty-specific clinical evaluation measures, (c) the development of the ACRCC, and (d) the opportunities for future research and implications for counseling preparation programs.

Computer-Based Counselor-in-Training Supervision: Ethical and Practical Implications for Counselor Educators and Supervisors

Computer-based clinical supervision of counselors-in-training is becoming more prevalent (M. Reis... more Computer-based clinical supervision of counselors-in-training is becoming more prevalent (M. Reisch & L. Jarman-Rohde, 2000); however, its use is still in its infancy, and ethical standards have not been established regarding its practice. There exists a dearth of literature focusing on the ethical practice and development of supervisees when using computer-based supervision. This article (a) explores ethical practice when using technology to facilitate counselor supervision, (b) reviews specific types of computer-based applications, (c) presents potential advantages and disadvantages of computer-based supervision, and (d) offers implications for counselor educators and supervisors. Clinical supervision is a crucial and necessary tool in the counseling profession. Bernard and Goodyear (2004) offered a definition of counselor supervision: Supervision is an intervention provided by a senior member of a profession to a junior member or members of that same profession. This relationship is: evaluative, extends over time and has the simultaneous purposes of enhancing the professional functioning of the more junior person(s), monitoring the quality of professional services offered to the clients that she, he or they see(s), and serving as a gatekeeper of those who are to enter a particular profession. (p. 8) Counselor supervision is the main vehicle through which counselorsin-training gain the practical skills and knowledge that will assist them in becoming ethical and effective helping professionals (Vespia, Heckman-Stone, & Delworth, 2002). As Dollarhide and Miller (2006) noted, counselor supervision is "the means by which skills are refined, theory and practice are integrated, and trainees explore their new professional identities in preparation for induction into their profession" (pp. 242-243). Many counseling professionals are involved in supervision, and it has been suggested that they devote much time and effort to this pursuit (Watkins, 1995).

The AMCFCC was developed to align with the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) standards, as well as the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy Marriage and Family Therapy Core Competencies (MFT-CC). In this manuscript, we (a) present the need for the development of an AMCFCC; (b) introduce the AMCFCC; and (c) offer implications for preparation programs using the AMCFCC and areas for future research.

The Assessment of School Counseling Competencies (ASCC) is a measure designed to assess school co... more The Assessment of School Counseling Competencies (ASCC) is a measure designed to assess school counseling trainees’ student learning outcomes in four domains: (a) school counseling program development; (b) academic, career, and social/emotional student services; (c) evaluation and assessment; and (d) professional dispositions and behaviors. The ASCC aligns with standards from the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs and the American School Counselor Association, supporting sound evaluation processes and continuous programmatic improvement. This article (a) reviews the developmental needs of school counselors in training and the importance of sound evaluation measures; (b) introduces the ASCC as a tool to promote the development of reflective, ethical, and effective school counseling professionals; and (c) offers implications of the ASCC for quality program evaluation and research.

Professional school counselors (PSCs) can support school personnel in promoting educational clima... more Professional school counselors (PSCs) can support school personnel in promoting educational climates conducive to optimal student academic and social development. Critical elements in fostering caring schools include encouraging positive relationships; providing leadership for teachers and school personnel; facilitating collaboration between stakeholders; and providing psychoeducation. This article introduces the qualities and benefits of a caring school climate, outlines the role of PSCs in supporting caring schools, and offers practical implications and a case illustration of a PSC supporting a positive educational climate. Building Caring Schools 3 Building Caring Schools: Implications for Professional School Counselors School climate incorporates the physical and emotional safety of students and teachers; this sense of safety is a necessary element for building caring schools (Manning & Bucher, 2003; Peterson & Skiba, 2001). While school climate is a general concept that captures the atmosphere of the school; it encompasses the attitudes, feelings, and behaviors of students and school personnel (Hernandez & Seem, 2004). Research suggests that in a positive school climate, there is an emphasis on (a) academic learning, (b) effective discipline policies, (c) respect for others in school, (d) attention given to students' safety, and (e) involvement of the family and community in the students' lives (Elliot, Grady, Shaw & Beaulieu, 2000; Moos, 2003). School climate may enhance or impede students' academic achievement. The school environment is based upon the interactions between the school and the community, students and the classroom, students and teachers, and students and other school personnel (Hoy, Smith, & Sweetland, 2003). Counselor educators are called to be effective researchers; however, limited study has investigat... more Counselor educators are called to be effective researchers; however, limited study has investigated research constructs within counselor educators‐in‐training. This study investigated the levels of research self‐efficacy (Greeley et al., 1989), perceptions of the research training environment (Gelso, Mallinckrodt, &amp; Judge, 1996), and interest in research (Bishop &amp; Bieschke, 1994) within a sample of counselor education doctoral students (N = 89). Doctoral students in their 3rd year of preparation had higher research self‐efficacy scores than did 1st‐ and 2nd‐year students. Additionally, higher research self‐efficacy was associated with higher interest in research and scholarly publication experience. Implications for counselor education are discussed.

Five themes were identified (cognitive understanding, emotional understanding, feedback, trustworthiness, and gatekeeping), underscoring both the benefits and challenges within utilizing the CCS.

Counselor preparation is multifaceted and involves developing trainees' clinical knowledge, skill... more Counselor preparation is multifaceted and involves developing trainees' clinical knowledge, skills and competence. Furthermore, counselor self-efficacy is a relevant developmental consideration in the counseling field. Therefore, the purpose of this longitudinal investigation was to examine the effects of a counselor preparation program on students' development of counseling self-efficacy. The Counselor Self-Efficacy Scale was administered to 179 master's-level counselors-in-training at three points in their counselor training and coursework, including new student orientation, clinical practicum orientation and final internship group supervision meeting. Findings indicated that students' experience in their preparation program resulted in higher levels of self-efficacy.

The Experiences of Counselors-in-Training in a School-based Counseling Practicum

Counselor education programs often must choose between providing in vivo faculty supervision or a... more Counselor education programs often must choose between providing in vivo faculty supervision or a community-based setting. Programs that combine both elements have shown positive preliminary findings related to counselor development; however, the in-depth experiences of students in such programs have not been explored. This phenomenological study examined the lived experiences of counselors-in-training who participated in a school-based counseling practicum with in vivo faculty supervision. Researchers identified six themes, including continuum of support within relationships, operational challenges and concerns, needs and challenges of the community, working with children, expectations and realities, and counselor identity development. Implications for counselor education and research are provided.

Many individuals experience some form of trauma during their lifetime, with the greatest occurren... more Many individuals experience some form of trauma during their lifetime, with the greatest occurrence in childhood (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], n.d.). Among the various types of traumatic events that people may experience, child sexual abuse (CSA) is prevalent, affecting more than 40 million individuals in the United States (CDC, n.d.). CSA is a form of sexual trauma that results in psychological, interpersonal, and behavioral challenges. One in four girls and one in six boys experience CSA by age 18 (National Association of Adult Survivors of Child Abuse [NAASCA], n.d.). Moreover, CSA is as a traumatic event even if threatened or actual violence or injury is not involved (Briere, 2006). The experience of CSA may cause profound short-term and long-term effects on individuals' mental health, including depression, anxiety, suicidality, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD; Paolucci, Genuis, & Violato, 2001). Although the negative effects of CSA are apparent, there is also potential for positive adjustment (Wright, Crawford, & Sebastian, 2007). Individuals with a history of CSA are not a homogeneous group, and many demonstrate healthy adjustment years after their abuse (Farber & Egeland, 1987; Herman, Russell, & Trocki, 1986). However, it remains unclear why some individuals continue to suffer into adulthood, whereas others are able to thrive. One factor that researchers have identified as influential in individuals' positive adjustment following a traumatic event is their support system (Brand & Alexander, 2003; Walsh, Fortier, & DiLillo, 2010). Further, to address the problem of PSC role ambiguity, it has been suggested that PSCs become proactive professional advocates and work to promote greater stakeholder engagement in their school counseling programs. The utilization of a large group guidance portfolio may address these issues. This article (a) reviews the need for PSC accountability measures and stakeholder engagement, (b) presents a case illustration of a PSC using a large group guidance portfolio, and (c) offers implications for PSCs.

Our quantitative findings identified that encountering the death of a student by suicide is common for school counselors during their careers. School counselors reported a range of personal and professional reactions and relied on different sources of support following students’ deaths. School counselors who experienced student’s death by suicide had higher self-efficacy scores related to suicide interventions than those who had not experienced a student’s suicide.
