To date this dataset covers 58 firms and their space units for the period 2010-2012 and it allows, for the first time in Italy, an analysis of the space industry in terms of its effective production units, which may be establishments, business units or divisions within the firm or the group or may coincide with the firm itself. The paper is organized as follows. The first section recalls the alternative definitions of space industry and details the coverage of the PSDV, which includes the greatest part of the Italian space industry upstream and Earth Observation sectors. The second section describes the main structural, technological and organizational features of ISPI and provides a discussion on the measure of its R&D capital. The third section presents an econometric analysis that estimates a knowledge production function paying a special attention to R&D and R&D spillovers' elasticities. The last section recalls the main findings and suggests some policy considerations to strengthen the role that the Italian space industry could play in the advancement of science, exploration and economic exploitation of space, at national, European and global level.
The present phase of liberalization of local public transport in European countries and in Italy ... more The present phase of liberalization of local public transport in European countries and in Italy marks the end of a cycle which began at the turn between XIX and XX centuries. After a summary of its developments in European countries and in the United States, we look carefully at its developments in Italy, where they have been overlapping for most time with the institution of Municipal firms. We rely heavily on a case study, on the ground that it could shed light on the rest of the sector. The paper concludes with some conclusions relevant for the present policy debate on local public transport in Italy.

We start with the assumption that the acquisition of new scientific knowledge is reflected in the scientific literature produced by the international scientific community. A bibliometric analysis of the contribution of knowledge by Italian researchers (researchers working in Italian research institutes) within the international context provides a very positive picture relating to the output of the research carried out in Italy in those fields. A productivity analysis tells us that Italian public resources invested in Italian space science missions compare well with those invested in the astronomy and astrophysics sector at the international level.

The factors that have contributed to this development have been political (the greater importance of Italy at the international level, efforts made to strengthen armaments in Europe), military (growth of the Italian Armed Forces, the taking on of new tasks within NATO and at the international level) and economic (strengthening of industry, both in terms of its presence on the international market and as part of the overall weight of the Italian economy).
