The purpose of this paper is to contribute to a vision for leadership in business, banking, and p... more The purpose of this paper is to contribute to a vision for leadership in business, banking, and politics based on a recovery of virtue. It draws principally on the works of the classical philosophers Aristotle (384–322 BCE) and Plato (c. 427–347 BCE) in line with the contemporary resurgence of Aristotle associated with Alasdair MacIntyre and others. In the context of an ethical analysis of the Irish banking crisis (2008-2016), the paper will show how virtue ethics can contribute to the avoidance of a repetition of the disastrous financial crisis of 2008 in Ireland and globally. It proposes a holistic approach that integrates virtue and culture, ethics and governance.

It first reconstructs key elements in his vision of the church within his overarching view of a ‘total’ ecclesiology. De Lubac’s vision of ‘totality’ provides a hermeneutical key to interpret his thought on the church and is considered in the context of his contribution to the renewed theology of the ‘mystical body’, the fruits of which have been garnered since Vatican II under the appellation ‘communion ecclesiology’. The second major section expounds de Lubac’s profoundly Eucharistic ecclesiology and shows how it provides a spiritual and social vision for the contemporary world.

All emergencies provide opportunities for leadership. Since the emergence of the pandemic, nations and governments have been concerned, in the first instance, for the health and wellbeing of their citizens. The chapter presents a response to the coronavirus pandemic under three headings. Part one considers how the vision of ‘servant leadership’ articulated by Robert K. Greenleaf may assist leaders of business and state in the face of this global crisis. Part two addresses the large range of ethical issues which healthcare professionals, hospital management, and members of the pharmaceutical industry have to address in the wake of COVID-19. This chapter describes the contribution of a group of (initially French) theologians known for pr... more This chapter describes the contribution of a group of (initially French) theologians known for promoting the work of ressourcement: renewal of the Church through recovery of biblical and Early Christian sources. The work of Henri de Lubac and Yves Congar receives particular attention (although the contributions of others, such as Marie-Dominique Chenu and Jean Cardinal Daniélou are also discussed), and the group as a whole is placed against the background of the social, political, and ecclesiastical context of France in the first half of the twentieth century. This chapter highlights the centrality of ressourcement theologians to the work of Vatican II. The final sections of the essay focus on one of the most important consequences of their work at the council, the development of accounts of the Church as ‘communion’.

I am grateful to the friends I have been privileged to make in the course of my research on Yves Cardinal Congar (1904-95). I wish to take advantage of this distinguished international forum to mention two of those friends: they are both French, both Dominicans and both contemporaries of Congar's. I refer to Fathers Pierre-Marie Gy and Jean-Pierre Jossua. I am indebted to them for opening the world of Congar's thought and life to me in a personal and vivacious manner. They have afforded me insights of their vast knowledge of theology, liturgy, history and literature, the result of a lifetime of study and reflection. Father Gy, one of the most influential liturgical scholars of the twentieth century and sometime director of the Institut Supérieur de Liturgie in Paris and professor at Le Saulchoir-the faculties of the Dominican province of France, 1 refers to Cardinal Congar as "my master and old friend." 2 Sadly, Father Gy died on 20 December 2004. He was part of that outstanding generation of brilliant Catholic scholars who were intimately associated with Vatican II. Possessed of a rare gift, high intellect defined by acuity and a gentillesse that one naturally associates with Christian courtesy, he was, like Congar, a peritus (expert) at the Vatican Council. Congar, OP (1904-95), assessing how his ecumenism contributes to the difficult process of Christian reconciliation. His original and transformative contribution to the emergent ecumenical movement in the Catholic Church was part of a wide programme for the renewal of ecclesiology which culminated in the momentous achievement of the Second Vatican Council (1962-65). The Council became the catalyst for change in the Church, its relationship with the other Christian communions, and the world. As Congar commented: "For the first time in history, the Catholic Church is entering into the structure of dialogue." 1 Congar had a quite definite idea of the close relationship between ecumenism and ecclesiology. The aim of this article is to examine the vision for unity proposed by the Second Vatican Council... more The aim of this article is to examine the vision for unity proposed by the Second Vatican Council and the World Council of Churches respectively, in order to contribute to a renewal of ecumenism. It begins by briefly outlining the contribution of Vatican II and of the World Council of Churches to the coveted goal of unity, with particular reference to their respective elaborations of the psychology of ecumenism, at that movement's inception. The article considers how Yves Congar (1904-95) and Willem A. Visser 't Hooft (1900-85), two of the great pioneers of ecumenism in the twentieth century, contributed jointly to its advancement. The penultimate part of the article considers the indispensable role of dialogue in the methodologies of ecumenism proposed by the principal protagonists both within their particular ecclesial milieux and beyond. An important objective is to assess whether the specific models for ecumenicity at the heart of the World Council of Churches and of the Second Vatican Council contribute to a symbiotic receptivity or to an inevitable clash of ever divergent paradigms, or both.
This paper explores the relationship between the respective themes of incarnation, ecumenism, and... more This paper explores the relationship between the respective themes of incarnation, ecumenism, and ecclesiology in the thought of Congar and Butler. By drawing Congar and Butler into dialogue on the incarnation and by relating that dialogue to their respective ecumenical visions, an effort is made to contribute to a renewed commitment to the original goals of the modern ecumenical movement. The paper considers whether a return to the incarnate Christ, the primordial source of unity in the world, provides new impetus for ecumenism; a hypothesis that will be tested by reference to the urgent challenges to the ecumenical movement currently emerging in Northern Ireland.
