Egipto, investigando como os antigos egípcios diagnosticavam e tratavam diversas doenças e
condições de saúde, e de quem tinha tal função. Esta dissertação pretende oferecer uma
compreensão detalhada dos métodos, conhecimentos e práticas médicas daquela época,
destacando a sofisticação e a organização do sistema de saúde egípcio. O estudo baseia-se
sobretudo na análise de papiros médicos como o Papiro Ebers e o Papiro de Edwin Smith (e
consequentes obras que os estudaram) para compreender os conceitos médicos, os
tratamentos e a importância atribuída à saúde pelos antigos egípcios. Esta pesquisa também
considera a relação entre medicina, religião e magia, proporcionando uma visão abrangente
do contexto cultural e social em que estas práticas foram desenvolvidas, e concorrer para um
maior entendimento e compreensão da prática médica no Antigo Egipto, que apesar de todas
as evidências arqueológicas, ainda é uma parte desvalorizada da história da medicina.
Abstract: The aim of this work is to explore and analyse the practice of medicine in Ancient
Egypt, investigating how the ancient Egyptians diagnosed and treated various diseases and
health conditions, and whose role this was. This dissertation aims to offer a detailed
understanding of the medical methods, knowledge and practices of that time, highlighting the
sophistication and organisation of the Egyptian health system. The study is based above all
on analysing medical papyri such as the Ebers Papyrus and the Edwin Smith Papyrus (and
subsequent works that have studied them) in order to understand medical concepts,
treatments and the importance attributed to health by the ancient Egyptians. This research
also considers the relationship between medicine, religion and magic, providing a
comprehensive view of the cultural and social context in which these practices were
developed, and contributing to a greater understanding and comprehension of medical
practice in Ancient Egypt, which despite all the archaeological evidence, is still an undervalued part of the history of medicine.
