This is a striking contrast not only to their diversity and quality but also to the global network of both countries, especially during the Early Modern period. To counterbalance this, specialists from Spain, Portugal and Germany gathered in 2021 on an international and interdisciplinary conference. In the Portuguese Palace of Queluz they discussed the fundamental issues of garden art on the Iberian Peninsula. Their contributions are collected in this book. They are proof of a cross-border transcultural approach, which has freed itself from national stereotypes. Also, it addresses insights which have been derived from the cultural interaction across the centuries and the different epochs of garden art.

Their letters are a remarkable source on the internal mechanisms of administration and the exercise of power in the Habsburg Empire in the final phase of the Austrian Monarchy.
The October Diploma of 1860 marked the beginning of a period of upheaval for the Habsburg Monarchy and the Grand Duchy of Transylvania. Romanians, Hungarians and Transylvanian Saxons had very different plans for the future. Some favoured annexation to Hungary. The others supported Vienna's centralised policy and hoped to strengthen their position in the province. The freely elected Sibiu provincial parliament (1863-1864) marked the political climax of this period between the end of neo-absolutism and the Austro-Hungarian Compromise.

And how does our mother tongue influence our speaking, writing, thinking and translating? In the answer to one question lies the resolution of the other. KyeongHwa Lee has explored both questions using eye tracking, writing process analysis, and a survey of study participants. She can demonstrate that people of different native languages store and process the information of a sentence in different ways. Apparently, the syntactic structure and the information structure of their respective native language are decisive. They influence how we understand texts, how we speak and write, and how we translate from one language to another. Similar sentence structure of working languages apparently facilitates the language transfer process. However, the influence of the mother tongue goes far beyond this: it also shapes our way of thinking.

Translation revision is indispensable for ensuring the quality of translations. It represents a s... more Translation revision is indispensable for ensuring the quality of translations. It represents a service of its own, associated with the provision of additional human, time and financial resources. The quality standards, the revision practice and also the performers of this service are the focus of a study with Austrian language service providers, which Madeleine Schnierer presents here. The results describe the practical framework conditions and the current status of translation revision in Austria. They also show the extent to which EN 15038 and ISO 17100 form the backbone of the interviewees' professional activities. These and other informative results demonstrate the high significance of translation revision within quality assurance.

As something that surrounds, extends, and presents a text to the world, the phenomenon of paratex... more As something that surrounds, extends, and presents a text to the world, the phenomenon of paratext is gaining more and more attention within the discipline of Translation Studies. This edited volume, with contributions by five Nordic scholars, aims to build on that attention by presenting five case studies on paratexts in translations into Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish. A special focus lies on the paratextual mechanisms at play when works from different source cultures are translated into a Nordic target context. The translated works under scrutiny belong to genres such as literary novels, non-fiction works, and religious texts, and the paratexts surveyed include footnotes, covers, blurbs, introductions, and literary reviews. The scholars represented in the volume all work in Translation Studies, or at the intersection between Translation Studies and other disciplines.

E2U refers both to Plain and to Easy Language. These two powerful methods of language and content comprehension enhancement are illustrated through several examples in English, starting from the seminal role of the Anglophone world in promoting plain and lucid style. Originally implemented in written texts, today the employment of these simplified language varieties should infiltrate new communication services that are more complex and multifaceted. Thanks to the EASIT project, the integration of E2U strategies into a selection of audiovisual services is being successfully researched. After advancing simplification proposals in the area of subtitling and audio description, Elisa Perego reports on the results of a cross-country survey conducted during the initial stages of the EASIT project: She pinpoints the background, activity, and training experience of those who currently work in the sector of E2U in Europe, and identifies the skills and the competences of, as well as a training path and materials for, future hybrid professionals.

Terminology on Accessible Communication has primarily evolved and been published within the borde... more Terminology on Accessible Communication has primarily evolved and been published within the borders of a given country with no or only little exchange across these borders. Since English can be regarded as the lingua franca of science, this first German–English dictionary of Accessible Communication will help to promote international exchange and an international discourse on this topic by attempting to define concepts that go beyond the scope of a single-country centered approach. The terminological work for this dictionary is based on the German Handbook of Accessible Communication. Most of the handbook’s contents are language-independent and applicable to other recipient communities. On the basis of the German terminology, the English equivalents, definitions and explanations were researched. The dictionary contributes to the development of a standardised terminology across languages and cultures.
The Authors
Prof. Dr. Silvia Hansen-Schirra, Katja Abels and Sarah Signer are researchers and lecturers at the translation faculty of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. Prof. Dr. Christiane Maaß is the director of the Research Centre for Easy Language (University of Hildesheim). Together, they were responsible for the translation of the Handbook of Accessible Communication and the terminological work involved.

Es lässt sich als eine historische Erzählung von Menschen lesen, die unter Migrationsdruck geraten sind.
Dieser Band vereint Beiträge zur facettenreichen Entstehungsgeschichte des Wörterbuchs, zu seiner dadurch bedingten spezifischen Konstruktion sowie zum Dokumentenreichtum der Wörterbuchkanzlei. Darüber hinaus werden am Beispiel mehrerer Dialektwörterbücher und Sonderstudien aktuelle Fragen zur Dialektgeografie und speziell zur gegenwärtigen und zukünftigen digitalen Wörterbuchgestaltung diskutiert.

The Russian Revolution of October 1917 was an event of global significance. Despite this fact, pu... more The Russian Revolution of October 1917 was an event of global significance. Despite this fact, public attention and even research mostly focused on Russia and the other states that became part of USSR for many decades. The impact of these dramatic events on other parts of the world was neglected or not systematically explored until recently. And in analyzing the events, political history still dominates the field. This volume, which is largely based on papers presented at the third annual conference of the Graduate School for East and Southeast European Studies, adds to this image some valuable perspectives by exploring the culture as well as the political and cultural legacy of the Russian Revolution. Three focal points are taken here: the revolution’s rhetoric and performance, its religious semantics, and its impact on Asia.

This book shows how accessible communication, and especially easy-to-understand languages, should... more This book shows how accessible communication, and especially easy-to-understand languages, should be designed in order to become instruments of inclusion. It examines two well-established easy-to-understand varieties: Easy Language and Plain Language, and shows that they have complementary profiles with respect to four central qualities: comprehensibility, perceptibility, acceptability and stigmatisation potential. The book introduces Easy and Plain Language and provides an outline of their linguistic, sociological and legal profiles: What is the current legal framework of Easy and Plain Language? What do the texts look like? Who are the users? Which other groups are involved in the production and use of Easy and Plain Language offers? Which qualities are a hazard to acceptability and, thus, enhance their stigmatisation potential? The book also proposes another easy-to-understand variety: Easy Language Plus. This variety balances the four qualities and is modelled in the present book.

"Tailoring Identities in Victorian Literature" is a compelling exploration of the representation ... more "Tailoring Identities in Victorian Literature" is a compelling exploration of the representation of clothing in Victorian literature. The author argues that the study of fashion and clothing can contribute to a deeper understanding of literary texts and their contexts. While fashion has often been associated with frivolity, this volume sheds light on the novel possibilities that can arise from the intersection of literary analysis with fashion theory, revealing fashion as a system of meaning that reflects deep social and cultural transformations, and offering new and innovative directions in research and literary analysis. Tailoring Identities in Victorian Literature draws on the conceptual framework of fashion theory to investigate novels in which the fashion system organises the signs of the dressed body, almost as if forging its own language. Focusing on the Victorian period, pivotal period in fashion history, the volume offers a rich and nuanced account of the complex relationship between clothing, literature, and identity, in nineteenth-century literature.
Chiara Battisti is an Associate Professor of English Literature at the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures of the University of Verona (Italy). Her research interests include intermediality, fashion studies, disability studies, law, literature and culture. She is the author of a number of publications in these areas.

Chiara Battisti is an Associate Professor of English Literature at the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures of the University of Verona (Italy). Her research interests include intermediality, fashion studies, disability studies, law, literature and culture. She is the author of a number of publications in these areas.
The October Diploma of 1860 marked the beginning of a period of upheaval for the Habsburg Monarchy and the Grand Duchy of Transylvania.
