An... more We consider the problem of sensoriality through its corporal, physical and iconic expressions. And we wonder what the world does to the senses and what the senses do to the world. We discover even when new spaces of identity open up as long as we take into account the very materiality of what touches us and stirs us. We conclude that a universal approach to expressiveness, modes of existence and of the affected flesh should be able to open a horizon of heuristic research about the body, simultaneously unique and multiple, one and numerous.
Drawing upon research on societies and cultures from all around the world, I argue for the constr... more Drawing upon research on societies and cultures from all around the world, I argue for the construction of an anthropology of presence. Among Samoans, the inhabitants of Lucania (southern Italy), the Runa (Amazon region), and the Korowai (Papua New Guinea), anthropology works on things and objects in terms of their manifestation and in accordance with their appearance. I study some topics in order to sustain my hypothesis: everyday nature, the ordinary aspects of life, the spatialization of the flesh, the artifice of bodies, and actions without a symbolic frame, etc. I try to explain if and how a thing can have a meaning without a symbolic intention. What is a world in terms of its presence without a background? How does the presence of things give a meaning without resort to reference?
