Through a long series of acquisitions, the garden would grow in size, reaching an extention of 12 rubbia and 15 scorzi (= c.240,000 sq m) by 1612. Vincenzo Giustiniani, who succeeded his father in 1600, commissioned the new layout of the garden, its paths, its landscaping and its decoration, also taking into account an initial project by the architect and hydraulic engineer Giovanni Fontana in 1596, aimed at piping water into the garden for use in the fountains. In 1607 the foundations were laid for the Rocca, a building reminiscent of the family’s heraldic emblem, as the backdrop for the villa’s perspective axis. italianoNel 1957 il Bollettino d'Arte pubblicava un fascicolo dedicato al Palazzo Giustiniani... more italianoNel 1957 il Bollettino d'Arte pubblicava un fascicolo dedicato al Palazzo Giustiniani di Bassano Romano, integrato poi nel 2006 e 2010 dagli studi relativi al giardino e alle antichita in esso contenute. Il Palazzo ospita al pianoterra un teatrino privato, realizzato in un vecchio magazzino fra il 1699 e il 1700, che conserva ancora un doppio ordine di palchetti lignei aventi conformazione planimetrica ad U, finora mai fatto oggetto di uno studio specifico. Questo articolo sintetizza i risultati di un lungo lavoro di ricerca archivistica che ha consentito di ricostruire non solo le vicende del teatro, dalla nascita al suo inevitabile declino, ma anche sessanta anni circa di attivita teatrale a Bassano precedente alla sua costruzione, inquadrandola nel contesto piu ampio del teatro a Roma e nello Stato Pontificio nei secoli XVII e XVIII.
