Dislocation walls in crystals under single slip

ABSTRACT The paper characterizes planar interfaces (dislocation walls) that separate regions of c... more ABSTRACT The paper characterizes planar interfaces (dislocation walls) that separate regions of crystals undergoing single slips on arbitrary slip systems in rigid-plastic materials. Using Hadamard’s compatibility condition for the total deformation, all possible pairs of single slip elastic–plastic states on the two sides of the wall are determined. Under a certain ‘generic’ condition on the relative position of the active slip systems, the slip strains on the two sides of the wall must satisfy a scalar equation, in the remaining ‘degenerate’ cases they are arbitrary. For such slip strains there are exactly two orientations of the wall normal; these are given by explicit formulas in terms of the two active slip systems. For large plastic strains the axes of the misorientation tensors are always crystallographic but the walls themselves may show deviations from strictly crystallographic orientations. For small plastic strains, in addition to the axes of misorientation, also the walls normals, axes of the tilt and twist, and the directions of the dislocation density tensors are strictly crystallographic; moreover the two walls are always perpendicular. Under the ‘generic’ condition the two walls differ in their dislocation structure: one of them is represented by a family of parallel edge dislocations while the other is a superposition of two families of parallel simple dislocations, of which one consists of screw dislocations if the slip strains are small.

Using a non-conforming C 0-interior penalty method and the Galerkin least-square approach, we dev... more Using a non-conforming C 0-interior penalty method and the Galerkin least-square approach, we develop a continuous-discontinuous Galerkin finite element method for discretizing fourth-order incompressible flow problems. The formulation is weakly coercive for spaces that fail to satisfy the inf-sup condition and consider discontinuous basis functions for the pressure field. We consider the results of a stability analysis through a lemma which indicates that there exists an optimal or quasi-optimal least-square stability parameter that depends on the polynomial degree used to interpolate the velocity and pressure fields, and on the geometry of the finite element in the mesh. We provide several numerical experiments illustrating such dependence, as well as the robustness of the method to deal with arbitrary basis functions for velocity and pressure, and the ability to stabilize large pressure gradients. We believe the results provided in this paper contribute for establishing a paradigm for future studies of the parameter of the Galerkin least square method for second-gradient theory of incompressible flow problems.

In this work, the performance of a unified formal analytical solution for the simulation of atmos... more In this work, the performance of a unified formal analytical solution for the simulation of atmospheric diffusion problems under stable conditions is evaluated. The eigenquantities required by the formal analytical solution are obtained by solving numerically the associated eigenvalue problem based on a newly developed algorithm capable of being used in high orders and without missing eigenvalues. The performance of the formal analytical solution is evaluated by comparing the converged predicted results against the observed values in the stable runs of the Prairie Grass experiment as well as the simulated results available in the literature. It was found that the developed algorithm was efficient and that the convergence rate depends on the stability condition and the considered parametrizations for wind speed and turbulence. The comparisons among predicted and observed concentrations showed a good agreement and indicate that the considered dispersion formulations are appropriate to...

This paper aims at the formulation and numerical implementation of a continuum theory for linear ... more This paper aims at the formulation and numerical implementation of a continuum theory for linear elasticity coupled with damage and diffusion. The continuum theory is described within the framework of continuum mechanics, in which the governing equations are obtained after combining the basic balances with a constitutive theory compatible with a mechanical version of the Second Law of Thermodynamics. The numerical implementation is based on the Implicit Euler Method and the Finite Element Method for the temporal and spatial discretization, respectively. It is used a staggered scheme to solve the resulting discrete model. Numerical examples are provided to illustrate the application of the theory and numerical scheme as well.

The distinguishing features of the theory stem from a systematic treatment and characterization of the reactions needed to maintain the internal constraint given by the coincidence of the mass fraction and the phase field. We also develop boundary conditions for situations in which the interface between the body and its environment is structureless and cannot support constituent transport. In addition to yielding a new derivation of the Cahn–Hilliard equation, the theory affords an interpretation of that equation as a limiting variant of an Allen–Cahn type diffusion system arising from the unconstrained theory obtained by considering the mass fraction and the phase field as independent quantities. We corroborate that interpretation with three-dimensional numerical simulations of a recently proposed benchmark problem.

Development of Superhydrophobic Surfaces via Isotropic Etching and Plasma Sputter Deposition

When there is an anisotropic chemical etching demand, the aqueous solution tends to have extremely oxidizing compounds especially hydrogen fluoride (HF). Consequently, the traditional masking methods such as photolithography which is based on the photoresist polymers may fail to protect the substrate as polymers also become removed by such a harsh etching solution. In the current study, a two-step deposition and chemical etching method is developed to form micron-sized arrays of silicon micropillars. A set of <100> silicon wafers undergoes a physical vapor deposition (PVD) of a silicon carbide (SiC) thin film. Prior to the deposition, an extremely fine mesh made of woven thin stainless steel wires is used to partially cover Si substrates. As a result, an array of micron-sized patches of SiC is deposited underneath each opening of the mesh while the rest of the substrate remains uncoated. In the next phase, the substrate is immersed in a highly corrosive solution (a mixture of hydrofluoric acid, nitric acid, and acetic acid). After giving some minutes of chemical etching, the uncoated parts of the substrate suffer from the etching process while those micron-sized patches formed previously to protect the substrate against the severe corrosive solution. Consequently, the bare silicon exposed to the solution is corroded and leaves a micron-sized pillar beneath the protective SiC coat. The etched substrates are used latterly to receive a thin film of the hydrophobic material such as polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE). The AFM analysis shows the topography of the surface and the morphology of the etched surface is studied by using the scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results demonstrate extremely high wetting contact angle of the mentioned surface. It is proved that there is an optimum corrosion time which leads to the highest contact angle.

We consider an electro-chemo-mechanical model to predict the behavior of a strip-shaped IPMC actuation. The flow is predicted using the Navier-Stokes equations. The model is implemented and solved using the finite-element software COMSOL Multiphysics. Numerical simulations of the hydrodynamics induced by the strip-shaped IPMC are carried out for the purpose of novel propulsive actuators that interact with vortex flows to absorb their energy and release it at appropriate phase. The simulation results might be used to determine the effectiveness and application of IPMCs for micro-propulsion mechanisms, IPMC cilia-like structures used for flow actuation and mixing applications.

The PDM directly discretizes the strong form of the equations governing the coupling between hydrogen diffusion and deformation in elastic solids under small strain. The method approximates a solution to the hydrogen chemical potential and solid displacement fields using a moving least squares approximation of the Taylor expansion through pointwise computation at collocation points. The applicability of the PDM is demonstrated through numerical results for hydrogen permeation through a Pd-based tubular membrane which are compared with those obtained from the conventional finite element method.

Although metal hydrides are considered promising candidates for solidstate hydrogen storage, thei... more Although metal hydrides are considered promising candidates for solidstate hydrogen storage, their use for practical applications remains a challenge due to the limitation imposed by the slow kinetics of hydrogen uptake and release, which has driven the interest in using metal nanoparticles as advanced materials of new hydrogen-storage systems since they display fast hydrogenation and dehydrogenation kinetics. Nevertheless, the understanding of the adsorption/release kinetics requires the investigation of the role played by the stress which appears to accommodate the misfit between the metal and hydride phases. In this paper, we present a continuum theory capable of assessing how the misfit stress affects the kinetics of hydride formation and growth in metallic nanoparticles. The theory is then applied to study the kinetics of adsorption/release in spherical particles. This work extends Duda and Tomassetti (2015, 2016) by considering stress-dependent hydrogen mobility.

Although metal hydrides are considered promising candidates for solidstate hydrogen storage, thei... more Although metal hydrides are considered promising candidates for solidstate hydrogen storage, their use for practical applications remains a challenge due to the limitation imposed by the slow kinetics of hydrogen uptake and release, which has driven the interest in using metal nanoparticles as advanced materials of new hydrogen-storage systems since they display fast hydrogenation and dehydrogenation kinetics. Nevertheless, the understanding of the adsorption/release kinetics requires the investigation of the role played by the stress which appears to accommodate the misfit between the metal and hydride phases. In this paper, we present a continuum theory capable of assessing how the misfit stress affects the kinetics of hydride formation and growth in metallic nanoparticles. The theory is then applied to study the kinetics of adsorption/release in spherical particles. This work extends Duda and Tomassetti (2015, 2016) by considering stress-dependent hydrogen mobility.
