In collaboration with infection control and hospital epidemiology, the quality management department initiated a performance improvement project to address 144 CLABSI events in 2017. Methods The performance improvement project team used brainstorming to create change ideas presented in a driver diagram. The team then applied plan-do-study-act (PDSA) cycles to implement and monitor the improvements. Finally, the team applied a bundle of interventions that included the following: (a) policies and procedures for central line insertion, maintenance and removal processes standardization, (b) physicians training for line insertion by simulation, (c) an awareness campaign that included recognizing healthcare workers and enhancing patient engagement, (d) performing root cause analy...

Affected victims display a wide range of signs and symptoms that impact their health. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of aggressive behavior toward healthcare workers and its effects on job satisfaction, general health, and mental health. Methodology An online survey comprising a revised version of the Negative Acts Questionnaire-Revised (NAQ-R) was distributed to the fellows, residents, and nurses working in a tertiary care hospital. The survey collected information regarding the group's demographics and their exposure to WPB encountered in the work environment while maintaining confidentiality. Survey results were analyzed using SPSS Statistics version 25 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA). Results Among the 339 participants who filled the survey, 53% of healthcare practitioners in different services had experienced some form of WPB. Among the targeted group, it was noted that female gender (50%), age between 31 and 41 years (57.03%), nurses (51.98%), non-Saudi practitioners (41.94%), and those working in inpatient settings (49.74%) were the most commonly affected individuals in the medical facility. Furthermore, higher bullying prevalence was correlated with lower job satisfaction and mental health levels. Conclusions Age, gender, job, and nationality were factors associated with increased susceptibility to WPB. WPB in any facility is an unfortunate event, especially in a healthcare setting. It affects health practitioners by decreasing job satisfaction, jeopardizing health, and increasing the risk of harm to patients. WPB will eventually have a negative impact on the medical facility and the healthcare sector. Hence, hospital administrations should be alarmed about the rise in WPB, and adequate measures must be taken to deal with the root cause of the problem.

This study aims to assess the knowledge of medical and pharmacy students regarding patient safety concepts. A cross-sectional study was conducted at Alfaisal University during the 2018-2019 school year. A survey consisting of 15 questions was designed with the help of the quality and patient safety department at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre, Riyadh (KFSHRC). The survey was validated and then electronically distributed to all students enrolled in the College of Medicine and College of Pharmacy. A total of 304 (22%) of 1368 students completed the survey. The survey revealed that 51% of students had an acceptable understanding of the types of human error; however, 53% of students had little knowledg...

Being knowledgeable about how to accurately identify patients and comply with identification processes is critical, particularly in countries where patients have similar names. A study was undertaken to examine the knowledge levels of and compliance with the patient safety goals and policies and procedures of the clinical and nonclinical staff. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional survey and an observational audit design were used at a specialist and research hospital in the Saudi Arabia to assess knowledge levels and compliance rates of appropriate patient identification methods. Results: The majority of healthcare providers (n = 350, 87.1%) and almost half of non-healthcare providers (n = 186, 47.8%) reported high levels of knowledge of patient identification standards, including the need to use two patient identifiers. However, audit results revealed that health-care ...

Since the blood culture isolates from patients of the study centre in Saudi Arabia are significantly more resistant to antimicrobial agents in clinical practice, we evaluated the in-vitro activity of cefepime and six other beta-lactam antibodies against 390 and 273 isolates of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, respectively. Cefepime had a broad spectrum of activity against the Enterobacteriaceae (MIC50 < 0.12 mg/L), Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter spp. and methicillin susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MIC50 2.0 mg/L). The activity of cefepime was generally two-to four-fold greater than that of ceftazidime. Resistance to cefepime was most often encountered with Serratia spp. (45%), Citrobacter spp. (25%), Enterobacter cloacea (22%), and Stenotrophomonos mattophilia (45%). It had little or no activity against methicillin-resistant S. aureus and enterococci. Cefepime was highly active, with a spectrum better than ceftazidime against Gram-negative, and better than cephalothin against Gram-positive blood culture isolates.

Eighty-seven percent of the strains were inhibited by 1.0 mg/l and all the 116 strains by 2.0 mg/l of azithromycin. Comparison was made with tetracycline, gentamicin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, rifampicin and ciprofloxacin. All the isolates were susceptible to gentamicin, tetracycline, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, rifampicin. One hundred and fifteen of the 115 strains were also susceptible to ciprofloxacin.

Its in vitro activity was compared with ampicillin, augmentin, penicillin, erythromycin, oxacillin and vancomycin against gram-positive bacteria isolated from clinical specimens. Of the 837 gram-positive bacteria tested 834 (99.6%) were inhibited by < 0.6–4.0 mg/l of Synercid. It had
