Analog tests of the new ISPA-tube readout system

A new readout system for Hybrid Photon Detectors is being developed by the collaboration and has ... more A new readout system for Hybrid Photon Detectors is being developed by the collaboration and has been operated for the first time to test the analog front-end. In order to test its performance we used the ISPA (Imaging Silicon Pixel Array)tube, a position sensitive photon detector based on the hybrid technology which contains a pixel detector array with 2048 pixels of 50 x 500 µm 2 pitch. In this paper, we present the first successful application of this gamma camera prototype with a compact and portable readout system based on new electronics, able to provide full control and real-time data processing and analysis.

This anode, finely segmented into pixel detectors provides binary images and allows for the self-triggering of the tube. Coupled to scintillating crystals, ISPA-tubes have been successfully tested in the field of gamma ray imaging, demonstrating real capabilities in both space and energy resolution. Recently, we have concentrated our efforts on the development of a compact and portable readout system based on new electronics and able to provide full control and real-time processing of ISPA-tubes. The system overview and the dedicated interface are presented in this paper.

The approach used, which may be applied to both the FEL and the Optical Klystron, is based upon a suitable extension of Madey's theorems. The advantages of the method are discussed, and numerical results are given.

The Time of Flight (TOF) system of the AMS experiment provides the fast trigger to the detector a... more The Time of Flight (TOF) system of the AMS experiment provides the fast trigger to the detector and measures the crossing particle direction, velocity and charge. AMS was operated aboard of the shuttle Discovery on June 1998 (NASA STS-91 mission) and will be upgraded and installed on the International Space Station at the end of 2003, for 3 years of data taking. The performances of the TOF during the precursor flight and modifications needed in the final version of the detector are presented.

The EEE Project, conceived by its leader Antonino Zichichi, aims to detect Extreme Energy Events ... more The EEE Project, conceived by its leader Antonino Zichichi, aims to detect Extreme Energy Events of cosmic rays with an array of muon telescopes distributed over the Italian territory. The Project involves Italian High Schools in order to introduce young people to Physics, also countervailing the recent crisis of university scientific classes inscriptions. The detectors for the EEE telescopes are Multigap Resistive Plate Chambers (MRPC) and have been constructed by teams of High School students who went in shift at the CERN laboratories. The mechanics and the electronics were developed by groups of researchers from CERN, the Italian Centro Fermi and INFN. The first group of schools of the EEE Project has inaugurated their telescopes recently. A status report of the Project and the preliminary results are presented. r

The ''Time-Of-Flight'' (TOF) system of the AMS-02 superconducting spectrometer, to be installed i... more The ''Time-Of-Flight'' (TOF) system of the AMS-02 superconducting spectrometer, to be installed in the ISS International Space Station, consists of four layers of plastic scintillation counters. During the precursor mission AMS-01 (June 1998), a similar system successfully operated in space for 10 days. However, the AMS-02 TOF had to be redesigned taking into account the more stringent mass and power constraints of the AMS-02 detector. The main characteristics of the new TOF system are (a) capability to stand the high fringing field of AMS-02 superconducting magnet; (b) high redundancy of electronic components for unmanned operation of at least three years in the space station; (c) capability to operate in the space environment on the ISS. Counters and electronics have been extensively tested before the installation in the spectrometer.

The proton spectrum in the kinetic energy range 0.1 to 200 GeV was measured by the Alpha Magnetic... more The proton spectrum in the kinetic energy range 0.1 to 200 GeV was measured by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) during space shuttle flight STS-91 at an altitude of 380 km. Above the geomagnetic cutoff the observed spectrum is parameterized by a power law. Below the geomagnetic cutoff a substantial second spectrum was observed concentrated at equatorial latitudes with a flux ∼70 m −2 sec −1 sr −1 . Most of these second spectrum protons follow a complicated trajectory and originate from a restricted geographic region.
