Fourier-transform theory is used to solve the longitudinal-edge-effect problem in linear inductio... more Fourier-transform theory is used to solve the longitudinal-edge-effect problem in linear induction motors, for constant-current conditions. Inversion of the Fourier transform is obviated by employing Parseval's theorem; calculations are thus considerably simplified. Experimental confirmation is given, together with an approximate method for sketching the thrust/slip curve. The ratio (goodness factor/pole pairs) is shown to be important.

Brief history Like the weather, good and bad, most of our CAE comes from the west. CAE originated... more Brief history Like the weather, good and bad, most of our CAE comes from the west. CAE originated as CAD on the west coast of the USA. Arnold of Sussex University describes those origins and the growth of the subject in his excellent report on the subject. The adoption of CAE was greatly accelerated by the US Department of Defense. In the 1969 aerospace recession, many of the. skilled CAD/E engineers were laid off. This provided turnkey vendors with a ready trained pool of talent. The huge markets in the USA led to a rapid development in CAD/E methods, assisted by the swing away from centralised computers to the powerful workstations of today. The scale of operations made it possible to invest very large sums of money in both software and hardware. One company alone claims to have invested 150 mancenturies in CAE systems. The ideas spread east to Europe. Arnold suggests that the UK was the first target simply because it eased the language problem. And indeed one can detect the occasional linguistic similarity, so providing a link between the UK and the USA. With the new technology came new thinking and a new philosophy. The boundaries between hitherto separate parts of the tendering, designing, planning, manufacturing and testing process became blurred, overlapped

The performance of large linear induction machines with nonlinear secondaries is predicted utilis... more The performance of large linear induction machines with nonlinear secondaries is predicted utilising the principle of electromagnetic similitude and small-scale models. A set of scaling factors is derived and confirmed initially using a pair of physically similar solenoids with solid iron cores. Static and dynamic characteristics of the model are scaled and compared with the full-size machine for both dynamic a.c. and dynamic d.c. braking modes. It is concluded that the technique can be used, instead of analysis, to give adequate prediction of performance.

ABSTRACT The authors (1978) have already shown that the study of longitudinal edge effects in lin... more ABSTRACT The authors (1978) have already shown that the study of longitudinal edge effects in linear induction motors (LIMs) can be greatly simplified by using an extension of the existing Fourier transform theory. The model considered was a single-sided LIM with a limited longitudinal patch of excitation and iron of infinite width and length. The present paper demonstrates that the equivalent multiregion problem can be modeled by utilizing a transmission-line analog in terms of the Fourier-transformed quantities. The process is straightforward and opens the way for the study of more complex problems. The model discussed has finite-length excitation with homogeneous layers reaching to infinity. The transmission-line analog with the transformed-field quantities provides considerable savings in time and effort.
