This overview includes the development of his daseinsanalysis, presenting its roots in psychoanalysis, existential phenomenological psychiatry, Heideggerian philosophy, and Indian thought. Also examined are Boss's contributions to the fields of psychotherapy, philosophy, and human scientific psychology. The latter contributions include Boss's explication of the meanings of three specific kinds of psychological phenomena: sexual disorders, bodily illnesses and injuries, and dreams. The article then concludes with the author's personal reflections on his experiences with daseinsanalysis and Medard Boss.
This article presents an existential psychotherapist’s examination of foundational concerns in de... more This article presents an existential psychotherapist’s examination of foundational concerns in depth psychology and psychotherapy. Following a phenomenological, hermeneutic approach to inquiry, it begins by tracing the historical origins of the term depth psychology (Tiefenpsychologie) as well as the meaning of the concepts of the soul (Seele) and the life of the soul (Seelenleben) as these latter terms are used in the works of Sigmund Freud. Drawing on the evidence of immediate experience as well as the daseinsanalytic thought of the German philosopher Martin Heidegger and the Swiss psychiatrist Medard Boss, the article then presents an understanding of human existence as Being-in-the-world or Da-sein, that kind of being whose essence is described, first, as existing as such (i.e., rather than not existing) and, second, as being-there (Da-sein). The article goes on to unfold an existential understanding of the meaning of soul (Seele) as the individual human being’s very own situated gathering of lived-experience. Grounded in this ontological analysis, the article considers Freud’s descriptive understanding of the unconscious before offering an existential view of being conscious or not as two basic ways of relating to one’s own existence. Finally, the article proposes that the human being’s ontological constitution as finite, fallen, forgetful, and fleeing as well as the world’s own ontological concealment make possible these two basic ontical ways human beings relate to their own existence. Throughout the article, a steady dialectic is developed between the author’s own everyday and clinical experience and psychoanalytic, existential, phenomenological, and humanistic thought.

This article introduces a relatively new and unknown approach to humanistic psychotherapy, called... more This article introduces a relatively new and unknown approach to humanistic psychotherapy, called Tao Psychotherapy that was founded by a Korean psychiatrist, Dr. Rhee Dongshick, in 1974. Today, Tao psychotherapy is a synthesis of Eastern and Western psychotherapies seeking to integrate psychoanalytic, existential, humanistic, and transpersonal, and Eastern perspectives in a single coherent approach. The article opens with a brief overview of the Tao and Taoism. A sample of writings attributed to Lao Tzu and Chuang Tzu is presented as a prelude to a discussion of the meaning of the Tao itself. Following this, the author, a daseinsanalytic psychotherapist who has been studying Tao psychotherapy in South Korea for over two years, presents an overview of this approach, introducing Rhee Dongshick and the Korean Academy of Psychotherapists as well as the distinctive character of this new approach to humanistic practice. The article closes with a reflection on the ancient allegory of the ox herder, as seen in the famous ten ox herder pictures, discussing it from Taoist and Heideggerian perspectives, especially as it is relevant to the process of psychotherapy. Throughout the article the author reflects on the cultural sources of Tao psychotherapy and on the implications of the approach for humanistically attuned, depth psychological thought and practice.
This article is based on a keynote address for the First International Conference on East-West Ex... more This article is based on a keynote address for the First International Conference on East-West Existential Psychology held in Nanjing, China in April of 2010. The article combines aspects of the originally prepared paper with aspects of the actual presentation, which was largely an extemporaneous exposition of the Chinese characters for existence, cún zài (). The article begins with an overview of the meaning and development of the discipline of existential psychology and psychotherapy as an approach to psychology that is committed to investigating and understanding the human as human. It then proceeds to a hermeneutic analysis of cún zài, explicating ontological insights regarding the nature and meaning of human existence: Namely, the that or facticity of human existence, the whence or the origin of human existence, and the how or the structure of human existence as being-in-the-world. Although the article is grounded in a phenomenological, ontological discourse, corresponding ontical discourse focuses on the significance of ontological insights for the everyday meaning and practice of existential psychology and psychotherapy. The article also defines and discusses the discipline and the démarche of existential psychotherapy as well as their relationship to actual psychotherapeutic practice. Within this context, the question of the nature of psychotherapy as a technical or a human activity is raised and discussed in both theoretical and practical terms. Extensive notes discuss complex historical and philosophical issues clarifying, supporting, and amplifying matters discussed in the text.
