Plurispecific fresh water zooplankton produced with rabbit manure, and dry artemia in powder (art... more Plurispecific fresh water zooplankton produced with rabbit manure, and dry artemia in powder (artemia Shell free) were used to evaluate survival and growth performances of larvae of Clarias gariepinus, Heterobranchus longifilis and heteroclarias witch initial weights are respectively 2.5 ± 0.0, 2 ± 0.14, 2.7 ± 0.1 mg for 12 days. Six experimental diets were tested in out of ponds by triplicate as follow: Czoo (Clarias gariepinus fed with fresh water zooplankton), Cart (Clarias gariepinus fed with artemia), Hzoo (Heterobranchus longifilis fed with fresh water zooplankton), Hart (Heterobranchus longifilis fed with artemia), HCzoo (heteroclarias fed with fresh water zooplankton) and HCArt (heteroclarias fed with artemia). At the end of rearing Czoo, Cart, Hzoo, Hart, HCzoo and HCart gave respectively survival rates of 74 and 73.5%, 63.5 and 60% and 70 and 62%. For a period of 42 days, a total replacement of the fish meal by a mixture of unconventional sour... more For a period of 42 days, a total replacement of the fish meal by a mixture of unconventional sources of proteins (Azolla filiculoides, Dialium guineense leaf, brewers' yeast and maggot) was carried out for the of Oreochromis niloticus fingerlings. Five experimental diets isoproteic (34.6 ± 0.5%) reference diet and four test diets (A1 to A4) were used to feed O. niloticus fingerlings of average weight. At the end, the final mean weight (FW) and the daily weight gain (DWG) in the test diets (13.66 to 14.84g) were lower than those obtained by reference diet (18.45g) with P<0.05 The same observation was made with the SGR (1.17-1.33 vs 1.83% day-1) and PI (4.24-4.85 vs 5.80) in diets. Successful aquaculture requires among other, appropriate stocking density of fish in breeding. The current study analysed the effect of stocking density on growth and survival of the larvae of the butter catfish S. intermedius in circular tanks. During 24 days, six stocking densities (5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 larvae.l-1) represented respectively by D1, D2, D3, D4, D5 and D6 were tested on larvae (0.152 ± 0.001g body weight) in triplicate each. The larvae were fed daily at 10% of body weight every hour from 08:00 am to 08:00 pm with the Coppens (56% protein). S. intermedius fingerlings were fed various dietary protein levels to investigate their growth performance, feed utilization and carcass proximate composition. Fish meal and casein were the sources of protein used in the study. Six isocaloric experimental diets containing 25%~60% crud protein (CP) diet have been fed to three-replicate six groups of forty (40) fishes (mean weight: (1.640±0.015) g) for 8 weeks. Both percent weight gain and feed efficiency ratio significantly increased with increasing dietary protein levels up to 45%, while there were no significant differences for protein levels from 45 to 60%. Growth performances and nutrient utilization parameters of fingerlings fed different diets varied significantly (p < 0.05) and the highest growth performance and nutrient utilization were obtained with fish fed on a 45% CP diet. The second order polynomial regression between dietary protein and specific growth rate (SGR) indicated that protein requirements of S. intermedius fingerlings ranged from 42.5 to 53% of diet. The highest protein content of the fish carcasses was found in fish fed 45% dietary protein and there was not significantly different (p > 0.05) with that of fish fed 60% dietary protein. Lipid content increased with increasing dietary protein levels. The dry matter and protein content of the initial sample were significantly higher (p > 0.05) than the values after feeding the fish with experimental diet.

Les facteurs essentiels a considerer pour reduire la mortalite lors du transport et le stockage de Schilbe intermedius (Ruppell, 1832) ont ete evalues par une serie d’experiences. Deux systemes dont l’un ferme et l’autre ouvert ont ete utilises pour transporter par voie terrestre de jour (6h-8h) et de nuit (20h-22h) des alevins de 1,8 a 2,5g et des adultes de 16,5 a 23g. Pour des densites de 10; 12,5; 15; 17,5 individus/L d’eau (alevins) et 5; 7,5; 10; 12,5 individus/L d’eau (adultes), les poissons ont ete transportes pendants 30, 75 et 120 minutes. Le stockage a ete realise pendant 7 jours en etangs et en bassins soumis a different mode de renouvellement d’eau (continu de 1L/min, quotidien au 2/3 et sans renouvellement). The amino acid compositions of Azolla filiculoides, Moringa oleifera and Dialum guineensis were ... more The amino acid compositions of Azolla filiculoides, Moringa oleifera and Dialum guineensis were determined on a dry weight basis. The total amino acids ranged from 50.83-83.01g/100 g crude protein and the essential total percentage of amino acids was 42.16% ( A. filiculoides ), 45.64% ( M. oleifera ) and 45.73% ( D. guineensis ). Acid amino acids (aspartic acid and glutamic acid) were the most concentrated amino acids in the samples while aromatic amino acids were slightly concentrated. In all the amino acids determined, D. guineensis had the most concentrated amino acids than A. filiculoides and M. oleifera . The calculated isoelectric points were 1.7 ( A. filiculoides ), 1.7 ( M. oleifera ) and 2.8 ( D. guineensis ), showing they can all be precipitated at acidic pH. Methionine was the limiting amino acid in A. filiculoides. Use of Moringa oleifera Leaves and Maggots as Protein Sources in Complete Replacement for Fish Meal in Nile tilapia ( Oreochromis niloticus ) Diets

Five experimental isoproteic and isoenergetic diets (30.44±1% protein; 19.64±0.23 kJ. g-1) were formulated, including one (D1) control containing fish meal, and meet the essential amino acid requirements of Oreochromis niloticus fingerlings. In triplicate, fish meal was completely replaced by ratios of 3:5, 1:2, 2:5, 1:3 between Moringa oleifera leaves and maggots respectively for feed D2, D3, D4 and D5. At the end, significant differences (P<0.05) were observed on the growth and feed utilization performances between the control diet (D1) and the other (D2 to D5) diets without fish meal. Determination of the optimal feed ration for best growth of Hoplobatrachus occipitalis (Günther, 1858) tadpoles reared in controlled medium

The current study aims to estimate the optimal feed ration in Hoplobatrachus occipitalis tadpoles (0.097 ± 0.026 g). Six rations (5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30% of biomass/day) were tested in triplicate to evaluate their effect on the growth, survival and the carcass composition of these latter. Results showed Specific Growth Rate and Feed Efficiency was not significantly influenced by feed ration (P˃0.05). Highest Specific Growth Rates were observed in tadpoles fed on rations of 15 and 20 % of biomass or 9.059 ± 0.209 %/Day and 9.027±0.142 %/Day respectively. Besides, highest mean values of Feed Efficiency were obtained in tadpoles fed on rations of 10 and 15% of biomass or 0.778±0.383 and 0.757±0.052. Optimal and maximum feed rations in tadpoles of H. occipitalis are respectively 6.02 and 21.37 % of biomass per day.

In Southern Benin, cichlids is of great importance and made about half (49.82%) of the inland fisheries. This study assessed diversities, length-weight models and condition factors of cichlids in South-Benin in order to contribute to species conservation and management. Six (6) cichlids dominated by Sarotherodon melanotheron (72.92%), a native species and Oreochromis niloticus (20.83%), an invasive alien species were recorded in Lake Toho. Likewise, the coastal zone comprised nine (9) cichlids dominated by S. melanotheron (74.49%) and Tilapia guineensis (20.06%). In both habitats, dominant species showed isometric growth patterns. The results showed significant (p≤0.0001) variations in the condition factors across both habitats. In Benin, cichlids have a high potential in fisheries and in aquaculture. Effect of animal waste and vegetable compost on production and growth of earthworm (Eisenia fetida) during vermiculture

The purpose of the study is to evaluate the effect of different animal product wastes and plant c... more The purpose of the study is to evaluate the effect of different animal product wastes and plant compost on survival and growth of earthworm (Eisenia fetida). Methods The study is realized in a vermibin for a duration of 90 days. The initial physico-chemical parameters (pH, humidity, ash, organic matter, carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus and C:N ratio) were determined in each waste of the different substrates before the study. Six waste products (pig, poultry, rabbit, cattle, sheep and vegetal compost) in triplicate (6 9 3) were used for earthworm production. In each 12-l content vermibin, 2 kg of substrate and 30 g of mature earthworms were sown. Each month, the growth control was realized by earthworms harvest and weighing. The earthworms were put back in substrate in vermibin and 500 g of substrate were completed. The pH was measured every week. Results The physico-chemical parameters (pH, ash, organic matter, carbon, phosphorus, nitrogen and C:N ratio) varied (P \ 0.05) according to different substrate. The C:N ratio of different organic substrates are in the range of 8.46 in vegetable compost to 19.39 in pig dung. At the end of study the biomass gain and mortality varied (P \ 0.05) according to different treatments. The growth rate varied according to different organic waste (P \ 0.05) and ranged between-0.06 ± 0.02 (vegetable compost) and 1.34 ± 0.11 (cow dung). Maximum weight gain and highest growth rate were attained with cow dung. Earthworm biomass gain in different animal wastes is in the order of: cow [ pig [ rabbit [ poultry [ sheep [ compost vegetable. Conclusion The animal wastes (cow, sheep, pig, rabbit and poultry) and vegetable compost can be used to produce the earthworm. But the growth and produce depend on the biochemical quality of the substrates and the availability and facility for using a nutritive element.

Hoplobatrachus occipitalis is a frog belonging to Dicroglossidae family, the most spread in West ... more Hoplobatrachus occipitalis is a frog belonging to Dicroglossidae family, the most spread in West Africa. This study aimed at performing to bibliographic synthesis on biology and ecology of this species in order to assess its potential in aquaculture. It lives along banks, rocky reservoirs and earthen ponds and prefers savannah areas. It feeds on coleopterans, caterpillars, spiders, vegetal fragments, fishes, crabs, ants, grasshoppers, locusts, dragonflies, frogs, mollusks, lizards, mice, butterflies, wasps and diptera larvae. The growth of H. occipitalis depend on the temperature and pH of the medium. A pH range 6.2 and 7 and temperature equal or upper, than 28 °C are suitable for its growth. H. occipitalis is an oviparous species. Its first sexual maturity height is 124.5 mm for females and 95 mm for males and it often reproduces during rainy season. The rapid growth, resistance and high nutritional quality of this species are some of its important potentialities for aquaculture. Natural reserves of H. occipitalis are overexploited and therefore no more able to satisfy the populations demand. A successful breeding of this species can help not only to preserve and strengthen the natural reserves but to produce regularly bulbous crowfoot for human consumption.
