The opposite is that women married in Civil Courts or through African Customary Laws are protected by a Legislative Framework. The Status Quo unfortunately is that religious marriages are not recognized in South African legal context.

Ironically, with the dawn of the 20th century, the world has seen more religious wars, ethnic cleansing attacks, wars on terror, and aggressive torture. This epoch seems to nullify the statements made in the UDHR 1948. Costas Douzinas points out that “our age has witnessed more violations of their principles than previous and less ‘enlightened’ epochs..the twentieth century is the century of Massacre, genocide, holocaust and ethnic cleansing..”
