We found that partnerships have much room for improvement in several key areas: communication and relationship-building, managing and evaluation of students, and cultural competency, as well as the challenge of short-term service-learning.

Some questions are: In what ways are we perceived when we engage in community-based work in developing countries? How could we best honor multiple sources of knowledge to ensure equitable, mindful partnerships? What infrastructures or frameworks aid in providing support to faculty, students and community partners across the globe? What principles, protocols and practices are in place at universities in other countries in their global research and engagement programs? How might we align our values with those alliances to maximize capacity building in an authentic, respectful way? Elizabeth will lead a roundtable discussion on the results of a survey on global engagement administered to seventeen schools in the U.S. in 2012, which has been written up for the U.S. International Education Association, and ask for feedback and deliberative dialog with C-U Expo attendees to expand the knowledge and resource base that we can all share to evolve in our work. She will also describe the model she has instituted at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, called "Wisconsin Without Borders" which involves a joint learning community to share philosophies and values as well as logistical and practical advice to faculty, staff and students designing globally-engaged projects.

Its newest development comes from research begun in 2006 in Madison on community perceptions of service-learning. The work resulted in publication of The Unheard Voices: Community Organizations and Service Learning (Temple University Press, 2009). The editors continued exploring solutions to issues brought forth by those voices, and collaborated with community partners to create Community Standards for Service Learning

It is based on the European-derived science shop model for democratizing campus-community partnerships using shared values of mutual respect and validation of community knowledge. The objective was to find methods that serve both community and institutional goals equally in a streamlined fashion. The Community University Exchange, the official name of the unique brand of science shop described, has just completed its first pilot year. This article analyzes how the stakeholders have found meaning in the process of building an infrastructure to help create more authentic, reciprocal, and mutually beneficial campus-community partnerships. This narrative is a map of the journey and the direction for future development.

Lack of alignment between campus goals and values and those of communities creates challenges for CEPs. Our community partners have expressed the feeling that students were not adequately prepared for community engagement and that it is the university’s job to prepare them. To support partnerships in inclusive and equitable ways, CEPs need to be skilled and comfortable with some critical, complex topics before they can train students or provide professional development to instructors. This reflective essay examines specific strategies for CEPs doing this work, informed by the literature, feedback from community partners and social justice training professionals, and classroom experience. This article disseminates the results of a survey completed by the University of Wisconsin-Madison of institutions at the TRUCEN meeting in 2012. It asked respondents to describe the frameworks and definitions in place at their institutions pertaining to engagement in globally-engaged learning or research. The authors also completed a review of data from several other higher education institutions. Both analyses discovered a general absence of institution-wide frameworks supporting global service and engagement. The article provides a good understanding of the current climate regarding these endeavors in higher education and promotes initial recommendations of good practice for individuals seeking to furth...
