Automated design for engineering student examinations using Matlab/Octave scripts and the Auto Multiple Choice package
2019 IEEE World Conference on Engineering Education (EDUNINE), 2019

A large set of exam versions is generated; each student receives a particular version with specific numerical data, and even specific questions. Exams are composed through LaTeX text processing instructions. As this process can be very tedious, Matlab/Octave scripts are included so as to automate the generation of input data and the corresponding answers for all versions. AMC then scans all returned exams, computes the scores and sends the marked exams back to the students through e-mail. Benefits arising from this methodology are as follows: (i) the students receive fast, detailed feedback from which they can self-evaluate their own learning process, and (ii) executing statistical analyses regarding the students' overall performance with respect to a particular question or topic is straightforward.

However, as the number of Power Submodules in the MMCCs increases, the applied control strategies, data communication and digital hardware complexity increases as well. This paper proposes a flexible and scalable platform, that is adequate for implementing different MMCC topologies (single star, single delta or double star), communication schemes (star or ring) and control strategies (centralized or distributed). The Processing Board explores the availability of Field Programmable Gate Arrays, Digital Signal Processors and ARM microcontrollers. The Power and Measurement Submodules processing capability is provided by Complex Programmable Logic Devices and ARM microcontrollers. Description of the tasks implemented in th...

The paper presents a discussion comparing this kind of vessel to the monohull and catamaran types. Naval architecture aspects of the vehicle design are summarized, and details on the hardware and software control architecture are presented as well.

Therefore, specialization, team work and coordination are required to achieve the desired goals. In order to assure positive synergy between every participant, system engineering concepts must be taken into account, like development methods, product decomposition, functional classification, design patterns, interface and compatibility assessment, configuration management, technological plans, technical standards, integration policies, system commissioning and validation. These systems engineering concepts are shown in the presented work through the development of a fully functional AUV system and control architecture. The control system and its components are properly described and compared against other state of the art architectures. It is also shown that it was possible to sustain the project development tasks among many successive group or generation of students, demonstrating the benefits of the proposed engineering methods. The proposed system was tested in field tests of the AUV during an oceanographic mission.

The IED was designed according to specific requirements of the overhead distribution networks from the Brazilian electric utility COPEL. The project aims to create a modular hardware and software solution, that could fit the today`s utility needs of a multifunctional device, such as a high-impedance protection function, and also future capabilities, in order to fit the newest Smart Grids scenarios of COPEL.

The proposed system, which is based on measurements provided by intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) installed at the substation level and/or along the electrical networks, is capable of evaluating the behaviour of protection systems, the performance of the networks under faults and power quality events. It consists of five software modules and a humanmachine interface responsible for: reading voltage and current signals stored in COMTRADE sets of files [1], [2]; filtering the direct current (DC) decaying component of the current signals; estimating the phasor quantities and identifying the transition instants of these signals; estimating the network's state; and presenting the results. The system is installed in "Companhia Paranaense de Energia" , one of the largest Brazilian G,T&D utility [3], and it is under evaluation.

Lead acid batteries are the most common energy storage system for electric forklifts; however, to ensure more energy efficiency and less environmental pollution, they are starting to use lithium batteries. All lithium batteries need a battery management system (BMS) for safety, long life cycle and better efficiency. This system is capable to estimate the battery state of charge, state of health and state of function, but those cannot be measured directly and must be estimated indirectly using battery models. Consequently, accurate battery models are essential for implementation of advance BMS and enhance its accuracy. This work presents a comparison between four different models, four different types of optimizers algorithms and seven different experiment designs. The purpose is defining the best model, with the best optimizer, and the best experiment design for battery parameter estimation. This best...

The proposed fault location system is capable of correctly identifying the fault point based on voltage and current phase components, calculated using measurements of voltage and current signals from intelligent electronic devices, located on the transmission line terminals. The algorithms, which are parte of the system, have access to the electrical parameters of the transmission lines and to information about the transformers loading and their connection type. This work also presents the development of phase component models for the power system elements used by the fault location algorithms.

This paper presents a collection of software programs that can be useful in the teaching process of power electronics and electrical drives. This tool is developed with Python language and libraries, which can be freely distributed. Without going through complicated mathematics and software manuals, students can obtain steady state waveforms from power electronics circuits, their mean and RMS values, as well as spectra. Electrical machine principles are also shown, using animation tools.
