The aim of this work was to evaluate irrigated banana (Musa paradisiaca) plantation as an alterna... more The aim of this work was to evaluate irrigated banana (Musa paradisiaca) plantation as an alternative food source to Africanized honey bee (Apis mellifera) colonies during dearth periods. Sixty uniform honey bee colonies were distributed in three treatments: T1 – 10 colonies; T2 – 20 colonies e T3 – 30 colonies. All treatments were placed within a banana plantation, but apart from each other by 1,500 meters. Parameters evaluated were nest brood area, nest stores area and honey area in the super, for a period of 140 days. There was no difference (P>0.05) in nest brood area among treatments, but it decreased in all of them during the experiment. Nest stores area was kept constant in the three treatments, while in the super was observed a great honey deposition in the beginning of the experiment and a subsequent decrease in T2 and T3 towards its end.
