My dissertation will focus on the subject of memory presented in The Encounter, Mnemonic, and The... more My dissertation will focus on the subject of memory presented in The Encounter, Mnemonic, and The Street of Crocodiles by Theatre Complicite. The first chapter will take a cursory glance on the subject of memory, its history, and a place in modern literature. In this part, a few concepts important in the memory discourse will be also explored. The second chapter will focus on the notion of identity and its connotation with the memory, here I will also try to define the identity of the Theatre Complicite, through its history and the name of the company itself. The third chapter will discuss the subject of individual identity. The memory of the individual will be studied through a notion of family and close relations as well as a traumatic past. Additionally, the concept of the name as a reflection of a human personality will be a part of this chapter. The collective and cultural memory will be explored in the next chapter, through the mutual experiences of groups of people and passing on memories from generation to generation. The last chapter will present a few devices use in the theatrical space to pass on the particular elements connected with the memory theme. The whole thesis will be closed by a short conclusion.
