Managing Concurrent QoS Assured Multicast Sessions Using a Programmable Network Architecture

In this paper we address the management of concurrent multicast sessions with security and QoS gu... more In this paper we address the management of concurrent multicast sessions with security and QoS guarantees. Their main feature is a high degree of change in terms of membership, implying the necessity for fast reconfiguration and provisioning. We will approach the management problem using techniques developed in the context of virtual private networks, adapted to the high dynamicity that we are confronted with. We propose a framework for the management of such networks by integrating the management and the control plane, using the programmable and active networks paradigms developed within the research community. We apply the framework to the management of residential user TV multicast, where an ATM based access network supports the delivery of TV content to all clients having subscribed to a DVPN.

Our model enables the evaluation of the global health state of a Chord community and to act consequently.

One major problem addressed in this model is the discove~y, searching and routing in a dynamic distributed environment. Among the different envisaged solutions, Distributed Hash Tables (DHT) are very promising. They allow the build of robust content addressable networks. Despite good theoretical performance properties, infrastructures which implement the model need a performance management framework able to monitor them in case of a concrete deployment. In this article we propose a generic performance management information model for DHTs. Our contribution uses a standard management approach based on the Common Information Model (CIM) Metric model.

Within the IETF, current efforts are focused on both a protocol and a data model definition language for configuration management. The NETCONF protocol describes the communication between devices to be configured and configuration applications. NETCONF does not describe how configuration data is represented. This is addressed by the YANG data modeling language, the emerging proposal of the netmod standard working group.

We propose a lightweight traffic admission control scheme based on on-line monitoring which ensur... more We propose a lightweight traffic admission control scheme based on on-line monitoring which ensures multimedia services quality both intra-domain and end-to-end. The AC strategy is distributed, service-oriented and allows to control QoS and SLS without adding complexity to the network core. For each service class, AC decisions are driven by rate-based SLS control rules and QoS parameters control rules, defined and parameterized according to each service characteristics. These rules are essentially based on systematic on-line measurements of relevant QoS and performance parameters. Thus, from a practical perspective, we discuss and evaluate methodologies and mechanisms for parameter estimation. The AC criteria is evaluated as regards its ability to ensure service commitments while achieving high network utilization. The results show that the proposed model provides a good compromise between simplicity, service level guarantee and network usage, even for services with strict QoS requirements.

The object-oriented information model defined in the OSI managment framework provides notations to specify such interfaces. This framework has been recently extended with a relationship model. Relationship modeling adds informations upon isolated object specifications and offers new services for the management of these relationships. In this paper, we address some practical issues on network management architectures. To implement this new model, we start from relationship specifications up to the provision of a relationship service within the manager role of a managment system. Our study outlines some lacks in the standardized relationship model and extends the notations with new statements to allow the development of a generic relationship provider. We also present a simple prototype that works on our Managed Object Development Environment. This prototype is a first implementation towards a complete tool for relationship management.

Within the last two years, the Java technology has largely entered the world of element, network,... more Within the last two years, the Java technology has largely entered the world of element, network, and service management and has undoubtedly proven useful in combination with the SNMP framework for both manager and agent side developments. However, very few experiments have been made so far trying to provide an in depth integration of this technology within the TMN framework. In this paper we present a free software which offers a generic environment which provides a basis for reaching this integration. This environment, called J TMN , is composed of a set of Java software packages which enable both development and deployment of TMN compliant components. Not bound to any specific management platform and easily portable to any TMN system, its goal is to allow experimentation and deployment of more advanced features such as mobile agents, active network management, and advanced delegation in harmony with existing TMN approaches.
