Data were gathered from a questionnaire, think-aloud and interviews. The analysis identified 3 broad categories of 16 reading strategies employed by the nonproficient readers: text-based strategies, knowledge-based strategies and interactive strategies. Results also showed that the nonproficient readers viewed reading as a decoding process and that they were aware of different reading strategies. However, they could not regulate the strategies to construct meanings from texts effectively and solve reading problems. Their unsuccessful reading was due to the interplay of factors such as a lack of word recognition skills and necessary syntactic knowledge, and ineffective regulation of reading strategies.

Critical literacy is a strategic instructional practice which aims at raising citizens' critical and social consciousness. The current study investigated how critical literacy instruction affected students' responses to conflict and their conception of conflict resolution. Twenty-one EFL college students in an advanced reading class participated in the study. Conflict in society was addressed in class through group dialogue and problem-posing. Open coding was used to analyze the qualitative data from class observation, students' writing assignment and interviews. Findings revealed the students' perspectives of conflict, causes of conflict and conflict resolution. Critical literacy helped the students develop inquisitive minds and critical awareness through problem posing and investigating multiple viewpoints. They were trained to accept and respect differences. Taken as a whole, the present study contributes more robust understandings of the role of critical literacy in helping students become critically literate citizens.

Currently, bike sharing has gained attention worldwide as an alternative to public transportation to address such issues. Although bike sharing was implemented effectively in many countries and many studies have illustrated benefits of bike sharing, it appears to have low usage in Bangkok as well as a lack of studies investigating factors that account for the low usage of bike sharing in Thailand. Thus, this study aimed to investigate factors affecting the decision not to use bike sharing service in Bangkok from the users' perspectives. Understanding the factors can help improve bike sharing service which could enhance the quality of life, society, and environment. Questionnaires and semi-structured interviews were employed to collect data at Lumpini 3 and MBK Centre bike sharing stations. Quantitative analysis and content analysis were applied to analyze the data. The findings showed that the decision of not using bike sharing was mainly affected by bike characteristics (a small number of stations and insufficient dockings), bike infrastructure (insufficient lights, improper conditions, and unavailability of bike lanes), bad weather (high temperature and air pollution), and little effort to introduce such service.

The present investigation was an experimental study with a pretest-posttest control-group design. The participants were 44 tenth grade students studying at a high school in a province in the north of Thailand. They enrolled in an elective course called English Reading II (ENG31202) in the second semester of the academic year 2017. They received training for 50 minutes twice a week for 14 weeks and were measured for question response accuracy using 6 reading performance tests. The mixed methods study was applied to investigate the use of metacognitive reading strategies. Several sources of data included the Survey of Reading Strategies (SORS), think-aloud sessions, and inte...

It also investigated students' attitude towards self-and peer-assessments in intonation learning. One intact group of thirty-five second-year students participated in the study. They were enrolled in Practical English Phonetics course in a State university in Thailand. In this study, the data were collected from pre-post-tests, progress tests, class assignments and self-/peer- assessment forms, attitude questionnaire, interview and final project. The participants received intonation instruction which integrated self-and peer-assessments as learning activities. Based on this research procedure, from Week 1 to Week 8, the teacher gave instruction based on the course contents. During these weeks, the students were trained to do self-and peer-assessments and the pre-test was carried out. The intonation instructions were given from...

Self-perception which mediates between knowledge and behavior plays an important role in the determination of the ability to comprehend and respond to information on the Internet. While the previous systematic instruments were developed to measure self-perception of reading among native English speakers in print-based environments, the present study filled the gap by developing a scale for measuring self-perception of online reading among EFL college students. The Online Reader Self-Perception Scale was grounded in the social learning theory (Bandura, 1977, 1986, 1997) and relevant literature related to online reading in a nonnative English speaking country (e.g. Adunyarittigun, 2015; Leu al et, 2004, 2013; Stroller, 2013). The scale had been refined and validated through multiple procedures: interview, experts' valid...

The rise of medical tourism and the increasing number of international patients from Asian countr... more The rise of medical tourism and the increasing number of international patients from Asian countries have led Thai healthcare professionals to serve a lot of Asian patients and to encounter a complexity of language use in their workplace. There is a necessity for these professionals to strive for an understanding of Asian accents spoken by the patients in order to ensure successful communication and subsequently to best provide them with highquality medical services. Therefore, the ability to understand Asian accents has become necessary for healthcare professionals. To enhance test validity and authenticity and promote beneficial washback, English proficiency tests used in healthcare professions should include a variety of Asian English accents. Unfortunately, these tests limit accents to the inner-circle varieties. With a high tendency of encountering Asian speakers, it seems unreasonable

Participants of this study were five experts and two groups of raters. Data sources included the experts' validation survey for the CTER, interviews and writing samples. Three phases for developing the CTER were conducted, and the evaluative descriptors of the rubric were revised based on the experts' comments. To complete the initial development of the rubric, the raters and the first researcher used the CTER to evaluate the writing samples. The scores obtained from the evaluation were analyzed to examine the inter-rater reliability of the rubric. The findings showed that the CTER contained six clear and valid domains for assessing critical thinking in argumentative essays of EFL students. The total scoring results from the six domains achieved a moderate inter-rater reliability with ICC of 0.70 and Kendall's W of 0.5 (p < 0.05). The raters perceived that the CTER could be used to promote learning and critical thinking of EFL learners. Pedagogical implications were presented based on the findings.

The development of a scale for measuring selfperception for readers of English as a foreign langu... more The development of a scale for measuring selfperception for readers of English as a foreign language is discussed in this paper. The scale was developed from the four dimensions of self-efficacy theory proposed by Bandura (1977a): progress, observational comparison, social feedback and physiological states. A 36 item scale was developed to measure the four dimensions. Five hundred and fourteen Thai EFL students at the college level completed the scale. Factor analyses and item-total correlations indicated that most of the items best defined their own constructs. Cronbach’s alpha internal reliabilities also indicated a strong coherence of the items in measuring their proposed dimensions. Students’ achievements in reading and writing in English are correlated with the scale. Regression analyses showed that the SelfPerception Scale for Readers of English as a Foreign Language (SPSREFL) is a significant predictor for students’ reading achievement.

The subject's self-assessment of reading, speaking, and listening in Thai was at a good level, although his writing proficiency was lower than that of his other Thai language skills. He started learning English in the 5th elementary grade; graduate school was his first exposure to English-language instruction. Based on his Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score, the subject was rated as moderately good in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Yet he sought help to improve his reading ability, comprehension, and retention. The subject was given a general questionnaire and a reading questionnaire on metacognitive conceptualizations of his silent reading strategies in both Thai and English. The subject was then asked to discuss his reading; these discussions were audiotaped during the 90-minute tutoring sessions held each week for 2 months in 1995. Findings suggest that lack of background knowlelge about the text topic may handicap the reader, as well as a reading misconception centered on knowledge-based rather than text-based processing. Questionnaires are appended. (Contains 33 references.) (NAV)

Millennials are considered as the biggest customer group of this service (Nguyen, 2019). In Thailand, the applications of ordering food are becoming more popular, and GrabFood is voted to be the most preferred brand in the industry (Leesa-Nguansuk, 2019). However, the data related to the OFDS and customers' satisfaction towards the services are limited. Knowing customers' opinions regarding their experiences with the service is essential for both service providers and restaurant owners because it would enable them to know where their paths lie ahead. Therefore, this study aimed at investigating satisfaction of the millennial customers towards GrabFood in Bangkok. Four hundred and twenty-one millennials who experienced GrabFood service in Bangkok participated in this study. A self-administered questionnaire was distributed through an online channel, and the interview was conducted. The finding showed that a majority of the millennials were satisfied with this service provider. Their satisfying experiences were derived from preciseness of delivered food, courtesy of staff, user-friendly application, reasonable delivery rates, respectively. However, in order to improve the service performance and enhance the customer experience, it is suggested that GrabFood should accurate users' location on its application, illustrate food with photos, and update restaurant service hours.

This cluster led to high numbers of transmission and impact on customers' behavior. People were afraid of going to fresh-food markets and consuming seafood products and that has significantly impacted the seafood business in many areas. Ladprao district is an area that has a large population with several fresh-food markets. The researchers aimed to investigate the challenges that seafood sellers in the fresh-food market of Ladprao district faced during the second phase of COVID-19 pandemic as well as how they manage the challenges. The researchers applied both in-depth interview and observation techniques to collect qualitative data. Ten key informants with more than four years of experience in operating seafood businesses in Ladprao participated in this study. Also, the crisis management conceptual model was used to identify 4 aspects of challenges including management, logistics, human, and building-related factors. The results showed that the sellers encountered many challenges in management, lower revenue resulting from sales drop and higher expenditure, loss of customers, fear of consuming seafood, leftover products, and shorter opening hours. Challenges in other aspects involve price drop, delay shipping, higher transportation cost, and temporary lack of suppliers. To manage the challenges, the seafood sellers had to bring back customers' confidence by issuing COVID-free certificate and following COVID-19 prevention measures, joining the government's half-half co-payment program to boost sales, adding more online channels, and focusing more on the pre-order to manage stock effectively.

F... more Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the online food delivery service has dramatically become popular. Food delivery riders have become a key personnel who risks themselves to serve food for customers. Issues about riders' compensation discrimination and exclusion from social protection became shrouded in mystery. Therefore, this study aims to explore the challenges food delivery riders encountered, the welfare and labor protections they received and their level of satisfaction towards such welfare and protections during the COVID-19 pandemic. The internet-based questionnaire and semistructured interview were conducted to gather insights to address the purpose. The finding indicated that main obstacles to operating food delivery service during the pandemic included the risk of getting infection from the COVID-19 disease, financial insecurity, inadequate welfare, and insufficient daily income. The vast majority of food delivery riders were dissatisfied with the assistance provided by the government and by private delivery agencies due to the difficulty of accessing welfare and protection. For this reason, both the public and private sectors should improve labor protection and welfare of food delivery riders to be more comprehensive and accessible.

The data from a questionnaire (53 respondents) including open-ended questions and interviews (6 informants) were conducted with 24 graduates and 30 fourth-year students in the English-major program who have completed and are graduating from the program, respectively. Findings revealed the participants' satisfaction toward four subject fields in the curriculum (language and skills, linguistics, literature, and translation and interpreting) with foci on three dimensions (content, knowledge and skills, and practicality). Interestingly, the field of translation and interpreting received the highest level of satisfaction in every dimension, whereas the field of linguistics received the least satisfaction. The implications drawn from the results suggested that curriculum developers should pay attention to course content and avoid repetition and redundancy among different courses and that teachers should help students see the value and application of linguistics and literature courses to the real world.

Teachers, as frontline gatekeepers, should empower the students and help them attain academic achievement. In doing so, language teachers must be critically conscious of the untapped potential of marginalized students to acquire linguistic and cultural capitals through English literacy education. This paper aims to introduce critical pedagogy as an alternative for teaching English literacy to marginalized students in the borderland school context in the northeastern region of Thailand. Having reviewed related literature, conducted field visits to a school near the border of Laos in Northeastern region of Thailand and had informal conversations with the teachers in the school in the area, the authors proposed three basic conditions that need to be considered in order to optimize the use of critical pedagogy. These are students' family and community backgrounds, teachers' experience, and institutional restrictions. Moreover, suggestions for implementing critical pedagogy in this specific context are proposed: 1) deconstructing the oppression which students encounter; 2) transforming real-life experience into knowledge; and 3) negotiating between transformative theory and reality to accommodate difficulties in teaching English literacy.

Consequently, the Thai government has launched the 50-50 copayment program to support the workers. Therefore, this study aimed to explore perceptions of factory workers. Three hundred factory workers were participants of the study. Online questionnaires and semi-structured interviews were used for collecting the data. The finding indicated that most of the participants were satisfied with the overall copayment project which could help decrease their expenses. Yet, they were not satisfied with the Paotang application system.

Subjects were 10 students in grades 4 or 6 who were identified as achieving below grade level and who were low motivated readers, and 13 parents of the children. Students were provided instruction on a group basis by 2 clinicians for 3 hours a day, 3 days a week, for 5 weeks. Volunteer parents assisted the students to improve their reading, either on a group basis or an individual basis. Students were administered the Reader Self-Perception Scale as a pretest and posttest. Parents and 2 teachers completed questionnaires. Results indicated that by the end of the program, the students (1) had more confidence in their capacities and self-efficacy of being a reader; (2) were more motivated to read; and (3) voluntarily got involved in literacy activities. Findings suggest that parent involvement had an impact upon increments of students' self-perception as a reader and writer. (Contains 41 references and 3 tables of data. An appendix presents an interview protocol.) (RS) Reproductions supplied by EDRS are the best that can be made from the original document.
