The influence of temperature and powder loading on the Metal Injection Moulding (MIM) green compa... more The influence of temperature and powder loading on the Metal Injection Moulding (MIM) green compact is presented. The feedstock used is a mixture of stainless steel (SS316L) powder and a composite binder system consisting of polyethylene glycol (PEG) and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). The bimodal particle size distribution powder has a composition of 30 and 70% by weight of fine and coarse SS316L powder respectively with a powder loading of 64 and 65% by volume. The Battenfeld BA 250 CDC injection-moulding machine was used to produce a MIMA tensile specimen. The as-moulded density was measured using the Archimedes water immersion method according to the MPIF Standard 42. The injection temperature was varied from 120 to 150°C while the injection pressure remains at 350 bars. The three-point bending test was performed using INSTRON 5567 to measure the green strength according to the MPIF Standard 15. Results showed that the bi-modal feedstock with the higher powder loading was more s...

Metal Injection Molding (MIM) process has some features such as shape complexity, low production ... more Metal Injection Molding (MIM) process has some features such as shape complexity, low production cost and tight tolerance. The MIM process consists of four steps such as mixing, injection molding, debinding and sintering. These steps are dependent upon the types of binder used. Successful production of parts by MIM is closely related to the binder system utilized. The role of the binder is to serve as a temporary or transient phase to impart flowabiHty and moldability to the powder mixture. This will enable the shaping of the feedstock to the desired shape during injection molding. To have a good understanding of the MIM process and successful in manufacturing, characterisation of the material feedstock is essential. This paper presents the characterization of MIM feedstock consisting titanium alloy (Ti-6A1-4V) powder mix with binder 60wt% of palm stearin and 40wt% polyethylene. The characterisation of Ti-6A1-4V alloy powder, binders and feedstock includes scanning electron micrograp...

In this experiment, the soluble binder, palm stearin molecules were extracted out from the compact parts by immersing the compact parts in an n-heptanes solution. The solvent debinding rate was then investigated under the conditions of different leaching temperatures. The weight loss percentages of palm stearin were calculated and the pore structure evolution was analyzed by scanning electron micrograph. Results show that a complete diffusion of the palm stearin molecules out of the compact part best at 600C within 4 hours of extraction time.

HPM yields solutions in convergent series forms with easily computable terms. The HPM is tested for several examples. Comparisons of the results obtained by the HPM with that obtained by the Adomian decomposition method (ADM), homotopy analysis method (HAM) and the exact solutions show the efficiency of HPM.

The experimental studies were conducted under varying machining parameters namely pulse-off time, peak current, wire tension and wire feed. The experimental works were designed base on Taguchi design of experiment. The optimum multi-objective performance characteristics was determined using analysis of variance (ANOVA) coupled with grey relational analysis (GRA). ANOVA was used to study the significance of process parameters on grey relational grade which showed the most significant factor. The grey relational grade obtained from GRA was used to optimize the wire-electrical discharge machining process. To validate the findings, confirmation experiment had been carried out using the optimal parameters and the predicted results were found in...

Solvent debinding process used heptane at optimum temperature, 60°C to remove PS binder completely as temperature is the only parameter that can be optimized. Thermal pyrolysis parameters for removal of PE binder from the injected 65vol% Ti-6Al-4V feedstock have been optimized by using Taguchi method. Heating rate, temperature and time were the selected factors during experiment to be applied in the L9(34) Taguchi orthogonal array (OA) to find the best set of parameters to produce highest density of brown part. Thermal pyrolysis process was done at optimum parameters: heating rate: 5°C/min; temperature: 510°C; and time: 90 minutes. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was employed to find the best signal to noise ratio (S/N) to express the contribution of the factors towards quality characteristi...

The feedstocks, such as biomass or solid wastes are heated to a temperature between 400 and 600°C, without introducing oxygen to support the reaction. The reaction produces three products: gas, pyro-fuel oil and char. This paper presents the techniques of producing pyro-oil from waste tires, as well as investigation of the fuel properties suitable for diesel engine applications. In this study, microwave heating technique is employed to pyrolyse the used rubber tires into pyro-oil. Thermal treatment of as received used rubber tires is carried out in a modified domestic microwave heated fixed bed technology. It has been found that, rubber tires, previously used by various researchers, are poor microwave absorbers. Studies have shown that an appropriate microwave-absorbing material, such as biomass char or activated carbon, could be added to enhance the pyrolysis process; thus producing the pyro-oil. The characteristics of pyro-oil, as well as the effect of microwave absorber on its yield, are briefly described in this paper. The temperature profiles during the microwave heating process are also illustratively emphasized. The study provides a means of converting scrap tires into pyro-oil and pyrolytic carbon black production. The proposed microwave thermal conversion process therefore has the potentials of substantially saving time and energy.

Ceramic open cell foam is proposed as an alternative structure in the automotive exhaust abatemen... more Ceramic open cell foam is proposed as an alternative structure in the automotive exhaust abatement system in the current work. Combination of zeolite and its interconnecting channels promote radial mixing and enhance turbulence which is highly desired in exhaust gas treatment. However, the associated pressure loss in the structure becomes a major limitation which may affect the overall engine performance. This paper addresses the pressure drop characteristic of alumina-zeolite porous ceramic (AZPC) filter and its effects towards engine performance. The filter employs polymeric sponge method to produce porous structure with a composition of 70 vol. % alumina and 30 vol. % of zeolite. Three filters were produced, namely the porous monolith, channelled porous monolith and cylindrical beads with the corresponding capacity for 1300 cc engine. Testing was conducted using a centrifugal blower having a flow rate up to 1224 m 3 /hour. Pressure difference for the filters were measured and compared to that of commercially available honeycomb monolith catalytic converter. The filters were then tested in the actual 1300 cc engine to determine the engine performance. Results show that the filters' backpressure is within the 400 and 500 cells per square inch (cpsi) of honeycomb monolith and only deviates slightly from the existing catalytic converter. The AZPC filters depict high potential capability as the pollutant abatement in the automotive application.

Katakunci: Pengacuan suntikan logam (MIM); serbuk SS316L; taburan lengkuk (S W); luas permukaan tentu (S)
