Identification of Energy Efficiency Improvement Measures of an Existing Residential Building Using Audit-Assisted Energy Simulation and Analysis

Depleting energy sources are forcing humans to preserve energy and utilize it wisely. Globally, r... more Depleting energy sources are forcing humans to preserve energy and utilize it wisely. Globally, researchers are working to find ways to manage the energy crisis. Residential buildings are considered to be in the most energy demanding sector. Therefore, efforts are being made to reduce the increasing energy consumption and make the buildings energy efficient. The paper focuses on finding ways to retrofit the existing residential buildings into energy efficient buildings. This study evaluated the energy performance of a G+2 residential building with a total of 3 floors covering an area of 991.68 sq. meters, to identify relevant potential improvement measures. An energy analysis of the building was performed using information modeling assisted with energy audit data for accurate and realistic analysis. It was found that there is potential for the reduction of the annual energy usage and annual energy cost up to 2.33% and 4.54% respectively, by making improvements in the window to wall ratio. Another potential energy cost saving of 14.8% can be achieved by changing Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning (HVAC) type, and 7.62% of a reduction in cost can be achieved through modification in lighting fixtures. Moreover, installing solar photovoltaic panels can save up to PKR 1 million, and natural ventilation could result in saving more than PKR 0.2 million annually.

Construction Project Management places large emphasize on planning and execution of the projects due to this project based nature of industry. Construction firms only consider project performance, the parameter to measure success, neglecting importance of strategic planning and management for higher profitability and quality business operations. Rapidly changing social and technological issues are creating such a professional environment that will enhance the need of strategically defining organization's goals in the construction industry in coming decades. To meet such a challenge, requires identification of current industry level practices. This study tries to identify the current nature of strategic management concepts and practices by the construction firms in Pakistan. Results have shown that strategy evaluation, research and development and use of management information system as a decision tools lacks in the construction industry. It is recommended that construction industry should join hands with the academia to undertake certain research & development projects that can benefit both of the parties.

Building energy efficiency is an important consideration for residential buildings due to the significant environmental impact of energy consumption and the rising cost of energy. Estimating and optimizing a building's energy performance is an efficient method to reduce its environmental impact and cost. There exists a lack of accuracy in estimating the energy performance of a building due to approximations in the monitored data as well as a lack of consideration for occupants' energy use behavior. This study aimed to develop a comprehensive framework that assists in accurately estimating building energy performance considering occupants' energy use behavior. The framework proposed a scheme to collect occupant behavior data, such as occupancy patterns, appliance usage, and lighting conditions, through a living-lab setup and developing an occupants' behavior model that was utilized for more accurate building energy modeling and performance analysis.

These factors are broadly classified under legal, organizational and technological categories. Further the role of information modeling to foster the integration in project delivery is discussed. Focus is placed on the aspects/characteristics of information modeling that can contribute to implementation of integrated project delivery. Traditional project delivery methods have been found by researchers as inefficient and litigious. As a result, the construction industry is in a critical need of alternative delivery methods.IPD has emerged as a solution, although its implementation is not without challenges. Therefore factors influencing its implementation should be identified as a step towards its probable use in the future for public-sector construction projects. Owners, particularly the public ones, are apprehensive due to various factors. The purpose of this paper is to investigate these factors and suggest an information modeling approach to overcome the impediments.
