Mental Health Mobile Apps' Instruction: Technology Adoption Theories Applied in a Mixed Methods Study of Counseling Faculty

influencing counselor educators’ behavioral intentions to
teach counseling students about mental health mobile
applications (MHMAs), factors influencing values of MHMAs as therapeutic tools, and to what extent counselor education programs are contributing to future counselors’ technological competence with regard to evaluating and integrating MHMAs. The conceptual basis was a theory triangulation approach using theories of technology use and acceptance and diffusion of innovations. Nine quantitative, two qualitative,
and two mixed methods research questions served to
guide the study. Participants were 132 faculty members from 99 university counseling programs. Participants completed an initial survey, an evaluation of an evidence-based mental health mobile application (app), and a postmeasure.

Hierarchical multiple regression, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), independent samples t-tests, and paired samples t-tests were used to analyze quantitative data. Results indicated that unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) variables along with anxiety/apprehension and ethical concerns are related to behavioral intentions to teach students about MHMAs. Semistructured video interviews were
conducted and analyzed in the qualitative phase to add depth and explain quantitative findings. This study has implications for graduate counselor education programs and related accrediting agencies.

The principles of beneficence and non-maleficence guide ethical codes, laws, and daily practices. In recommending eHealth and mHealth applications (apps) to patients, of course professionals must carefully consider issues such as privacy, informed consent, security of confidential data, and potential harm. eHealth and mHealth ethics are certainly not to be dismissed. A current trend, however, as evidenced by a February 2014 review of mental health association conference topics, is for associations to offer education on ethical issues associated with technologies without including many sessions on evidence-based advantages of these technologies. In fact, out of 1,479 presentations at eleven mental health association conferences in 2013-2014, only 71 (4.8%) were on mental health technology-related topics and 12 of these (17%) focused on technology-related ethical issues....

Along with the emergence of MHMAs comes the need for diligence in ensuring safety, protecting privacy, and maximizing the benefits of these innovations. With billions of mobile phone users and billions of app downloads, mobile apps are highly relevant to the 2015 AECT conference, Accelerate Learning: Racing into the Future. Slides will be used to present a mixed methods dissertation study regarding MHMAs in counselor education. Researchers affiliated with education PhD programs in Australia and New Zealand, and an education... more Researchers affiliated with education PhD programs in Australia and New Zealand, and an education EdD program in the United States aimed to enhance understanding of contemporary education doctorate approaches and challenges. The central research question was: What knowledge will emerge regarding education doctoral programs through the lens of globalization? Using a descriptive interpretive research paradigm, collaborators determined that although education doctorate approaches vary, skills developed are similar. As researchers are increasingly viewed as strategic assets, access to quality education is essential. Doctoral program planners must attend to the paradigm shift away from traditional apprenticeship supervision pedagogy to structured and standardized approaches. For sustainability, online education must be integrated into doctoral programs, while ensuring faculty are trained in distance education theory and best practices. As growth in doctoral enrollments drives the need for more faculty, program planners must also aim to solve related problems of contingent academic labor.
