The emphasis here on Western cultural history written from a Palestinian perspective, though in many cases, students may elect to alter and/or narrow the focus for their own purposes in critical, comparative/Socio-historical Analysis, macro-structural to close up micro-structural analysis of narratives, conceptual, and causal analysis. Specifically, they may ▪ Extend the work of the timeline by developing different categories (media, human rights, intellectual freedom, ideologies, theatre and the performing arts, cultural institutions, academic disciplines, technologies, and warfare, for instance) ▪ Add notes in languages other than English on key concepts associated with particular historical periods and/or terminology ▪ Add a glossary of relevant terms (English and/or another language) for both the content and the methodologies used in the collection and representation of historical data ▪ Add details in the form of footnotes on particular historical figures, events, publications, influence ▪ Add brief quotations to illustrate references to selected items ▪ Add images to illustrate key developments in architecture, painting, cartography, products of mass culture, etc. ▪ Add bibliographies of primary and secondary sources The assignment provides a context for understanding the nature and function (or consequences) of bias in the production of an historical narrative. The emphasis here is on methodology-applying analytic strategies and techniques commonly used in literature and literary theory (those of narratology and the New Historicism, for example)-and and on content derived from a multiplicity if knowledge domains. The format (tabular, as opposed to graphic) is important because of the quantity of data that can be entered in abbreviated or telegraphic form and arranged in lists, so that connections and patterns in the data can be made more visible.

The books will be published in late April by Lamnbert Academic and drafts appearing on this website will be deleted by Jan 1. I will, however, make sample pages available for each of the books. All course content-readings, video-taped lectures, and films-are available to students and seminar participants directly by means of hyperlinks. For use off-line, all course content as well as the entire AARC digital library, its catalog and holdings, are available on removable storage devices. Last update, Dec. 19 2019.

In its true sense, that of originality in thought and action, though no one says that it is not a thing to be admired, nearly all, at heart, think that they can do very well without it .---John Stuart Mill, from On Liberty
