Pedagogical representation of visual images in EFL textbooks: a multimodal perspective

This study adopts the framework proposed by KvL to analyse visual images in Indonesian senior hig... more This study adopts the framework proposed by KvL to analyse visual images in Indonesian senior high school EFL textbooks, to shed light on their functions as well as their appropriateness and suitability for pedagogical purposes. The data in this study cover all the visual images in the three EFL textbooks, a total of 232 images. The findings suggest that, regarding gender bias and stereotypes males were more frequently portrayed than females (66% and 34% of images respectively). Also, the meaning of the images suggested an objective and impersonal connection between images and viewers. Moreover, there was no apparent power discrepancy between images and viewers suggesting that students would be able to make connections to the images. Furthermore, it is suggested that the visual images could help students to engage effectively with the exercises and provide emphasis for the assertions made in the linguistic parts of the text. Thus, the image-structuring in the three senior high school EFL textbooks in Indonesia provided and emphasised concepts and meaning in the text.

Hence, this study analysed the implementation of using media particularly radio programme to improve students' speaking skill. This study employed action research and there were 42 students of senior high school involved in this study. The results indicate that the implementation of media (radio talk show programme) assists students to improve their speaking skill. It can be one of methods in teaching and learning process especially in speaking class; and the influence of media (radio talk show programme) could encourages and motivates students to pull out their best of communication skill particularly in using English.

Berbagai aplikasi pengolah pustaka bisa dimanfaatkan dalam mendukung mahasiswa menyelesaikan tuga... more Berbagai aplikasi pengolah pustaka bisa dimanfaatkan dalam mendukung mahasiswa menyelesaikan tugas akhir salah satunya melalui Mendeley. Mendeley merupakan aplikasi yang memiliki kemampuan dalam mengolah database ilmiah berupa ebook, e-journal, dan pustaka lainnya. Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk memberikan informasi kepada para mahasiswa akhir untuk bisa menggunakan aplikasi Mendeley dalam mengolah daftar pustaka untuk membantu dalam penyelesaian karya tulis ilmiah mereka seperti skripsi. Kegiatan ini dilaksanakan dengan memberikan pendampingan kepada mahasiswa di 5 perguruan tinggi di NTB yang terdiri dari 60 peserta. Tahapan yang dilakukan dalam kegiatan ini yaitu sesi memberikan gambaran umum dan manfaat aplikasi Mendeley yang dilanjutkan dengan menjelaskan materi terkait penggunaan Mendeley, kemudian dilaksanakan praktek langsung dalam menggunakan Mendeley. Berdasarkan pelaksanaan kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini terdapat hasil sebagai berikut: (1) mahasiswa diberikan bimbingan menggunakan aplikasi Mendeley dalam mengolah pustaka dan cara mengutip tulisan ilmiah orang lain, dan (2) penggunaan aplikasi Mendeley dapat membantu mahasiswa akhir dalam mengelola daftar pustaka untuk penulisan karya tulis ilmiah, skripsi, dan hasil penelitian lainnya.

This paper has presented qualitative theories and features advantages and limitations, the criteria of good qualitative research, and analysis of two articles based on Tracy"s model. The analysis result showed that both articles have some limitations such as the uncovering of potential resources and perspectives on how effective extensive reading programs should be implemented in tertiary education in Indonesia. However, most of the criteria that Tracy established were found in these articles, such as relevance of the area of study, timeliness and significance; sufficient, abundant, appropriate and complex use of theoretical constructs, as well as data collection and analysis processes.

The focus of this study is to know students' perceptions on English in order to give some feedbac... more The focus of this study is to know students' perceptions on English in order to give some feedbacks to improve their ability in learning English. Therefore, the objectives of the study were to investigate the students' perceptions on English as a medium of instruction, to know some factors influencing the students' perceptions and to identify whether there is any relationship between students' perceptions and their English achievements. This study employed qualitative research and the data were collected through documentation, classroom observation and questionnaire which were analyzed using percentage formula. The study reveals that students have both positive and negative perceptions against English and there are some factors contributing to students' perceptions, such as attitudes, beliefs about self, goals, involvement, environmental support and personal attributes. Keywords-perceptions, medium of instruction, English as a medium of instruction.

It examines how employing MALL in learning English can improve students' receptive skills, productive skills, and other skills by conducting critical literature review to answer the research question. The results showed that employing mobile applications in learning English is effective to develop L2 learners' English skills and also Mobile apps help L2 learners in learning English both as the second and foreign language. Interestingly, in the situation of the global pandemic which many schools are closed, mobile technology has helped students in learning English skills. It can be suggested that by employing Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL) in learning English skills plays a crucial role in the situation of the global pandemic of COVID 19 where teachers and students can use mobile apps both in and outside the classroom because it is convenient and user friendly.

As a driving force in an educational institute, teachers with high agency can be analogous to critical enzymes in the body of education. However, whether or not a sense of agency has been introduced, promoted, or facilitated amongst students studying to become teachers still receives little attention. This study seeks for evidence of potencies and typology of agency amongst final year pre-service English teachers (PSETs). 199 students were facilitated to explore English learning problems in high schools and constructed problem-based lesson plans from which their agency was identified. 24 PSETs with a high degree of agency were involved in a focus group discussion. The Introduction chapter, to some extent, becomes a challenging task to do, like the role that it upholds. Swales (2004), on his model of Create-a-Research-Space (CARS), has given a guideline in composing the introduction chapter using three moves: establishing a territory, establishing a niche, and occupying the niche. This study aims to analyze 32 BT’s introduction chapter in one of English Major of State Islamic Colleges in Indonesia by employing CARS model as the framework. Also, the lexical signal in the rhetorical structure is considered. The results demonstrated that the moves occurrences do not thoroughly perform the rhetorical structure given in the CARS model. This study suggests that academic writing is necessary for students to seek a higher-education path must be equipped with an awareness of structuring arguments. Mendeley merupakan aplikasi yang memiliki kemampuan dalam mengolah database ilmiah berupa e-book, e-journal, dan pustaka lainnya. Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk memberikan informasi kepada para mahasiswa akhir untuk bisa menggunakan aplikasi Mendeley dalam mengolah daftar pustaka untuk membantu dalam penyelesaian karya tulis ilmiah mereka seperti skripsi. The Introduction chapter, to some extent, becomes a challenging task to do, like the role that it upholds. Swales (2004), on his model of Create-a-Research-Space (CARS), has given a guideline in composing the introduction chapter using three moves: establishing a territory, establishing a niche, and occupying the niche. This study aims to analyze 32 BT’s introduction chapter in one of English Major of State Islamic Colleges in Indonesia by employing CARS model as the framework. Also, the lexical signal in the rhetorical structure is considered. The results demonstrated that the moves occurrences do not thoroughly perform the rhetorical structure given in the CARS model. This study suggests that academic writing is necessary for students to seek a higher-education path must be equipped with an awareness of structuring arguments. This paper has presented qualitative theories and features advantages and limitations, the criteria of good qualitative research, and analysis of two articles based on Tracy’s model. The analysis result showed that both articles have some limitations such as the uncovering of potential resources and perspectives on how effective extensive reading programs should be implemented in tertiary education in Indonesia. However, most of the criteria that Tracy established were found in these articles, such as relevance of the area of study, timeliness and significance; sufficient, abundant, appropriate and complex use of theoretical constructs, as well as data collection and analysis processes. ABSTRACT This study adopts the framework proposed by KvL to analyse visual images in Indonesian s... more ABSTRACT This study adopts the framework proposed by KvL to analyse visual images in Indonesian senior high school EFL textbooks, to shed light on their functions as well as their appropriateness and suitability for pedagogical purposes. The data in this study cover all the visual images in the three EFL textbooks, a total of 232 images. The findings suggest that, regarding gender bias and stereotypes males were more frequently portrayed than females (66% and 34% of images respectively). Also, the meaning of the images suggested an objective and impersonal connection between images and viewers. Moreover, there was no apparent power discrepancy between images and viewers suggesting that students would be able to make connections to the images. Furthermore, it is suggested that the visual images could help students to engage effectively with the exercises and provide emphasis for the assertions made in the linguistic parts of the text. Thus, the image-structuring in the three senior high school EFL textbooks in Indonesia provided and emphasised concepts and meaning in the text.
