According to the 2011 census elderly population contributes to 7.4% of the total population. Both physical and mental disorders are prevalent among the elderly. Symptoms of depression in older people are often overlooked and untreated. Depression leads to loss of appetite, diminution of food intake, and weight loss consequently leading to malnutrition. Methodology: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among the geriatric population of urban field practice area using a predesigned, semi-structured questionnaire. Geriatric Depression was assessed using Geriatric Depression Scale and Nutritional Status using the Mini Nutritional Assessment Scale. House to house survey of the Geriatric population was conducted after obtaining written consent. Results: Out of 260 participants, 51.5% of the population were males, 49.2% of the population belonged to 60-69 years age group and 16.9% of them were more than 80 years of age. The prevalence of geriatric depression was 68.5 %,). The majority (64%) of the elderly population were at risk of malnutrition. Depression scores were negatively correlated with nutritional scores. Conclusion: The prevalence of depression and malnutrition was considerably high among the elderly population. Malnutrition among the elderly is a significant determinant of malnutrition.

Permission was taken from CPM, NWKRTC, Gokul road, Hubli. Data was collected by using the questionnaire regarding the socio-demographic profile which contained name, age, education status, socioeconomic status, marital status etc. General information about the bus drivers regarding number of years of service, no. of hours of sleep and work, bad habits etc. were collected. Frequency of bus passenger accident by each bus drivers, concern for driving, confirming safe conditions for drive observed by the drivers during their work were asked. Then depression among bus drivers was assessed by self rating depression scale 4. Various job stressors like aptitude for job, bad environment in bus and among colleagues, complaints from passenger were taken. Lastly details regarding recognition from others about their job were collected. The data was then tabulated in MS excel, correlation tests were applied to the suitable tabulated data and the same was analysed in SPSS 17.0.

Various studies have observed seasonality of occurrence of bacterial meningitis most commonly in dry and cold seasons. Studies of seasonal variation contribute to understanding the etiology of infections, health-care planning for prevention, and rational use of hospital resources. Objectives: The objectives of the study were to know the seasonal variations and trend in the admissions of community-acquired acute bacterial meningitis in Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) Hospital. Methods: A time series analysis by compiling monthly data of bacterial meningitis cases admitted in KIMS, Hubli, from the reports of medical records department for a period of 5 years from January 2014 to December 2018. Results: The peaks for hospitalizations were predominantly in March-May and even the seasonality for aggregate years occurs as peak effect in summer. Hospitalizations for bacterial meningitis showed a periodicity of 3-4 months in each year along with cyclical trend over the years studied. Conclusion: This study found evidence of seasonality for bacterial meningitis, thereby suggesting that hospitals should be prepared for providing clinical services round the year; however, more resources may be required during the peak months of March-May.

According tothe current data the predictors for quality of life in HIV infected individuals are present health condition,antiretroviral therapy, psychological well-being, social support systems, coping strategies and spiritual wellbeing.Objectives : To assess the QOL of people with HIV/AIDS and the impact of various domains of quality oflife in people with HIV/AIDS.Methods: A cross sectional was study conducted on 100 HIV infected people attending “KIMS Hubli”. Aface to face interview was conducted using a pre-tested, semi-structured questionnaire adopted from WHOQOL Questionnaire. It covers the respondent’s perception of overall quality of life within the six broaddomains. The reply was according to the five point Likert scale.Results: 70.83 % of the illiterates and 68.4% of the literates scored badly in spirituality domain; and,66.67% of the illiterates have scored well while 63.15% of the literates have scored well in the environmentdomain. 56.25% of the married participants scored well in social relationship domain.60.42% of the marriedparticipants scored well in Environment domain.Conclusion: Spiritual domain is affected the most in the patients living with HIV. Married people scoredwell in the social relationship and environment domain. Gender has affected the physical domain and levelof independence. In these domains females have scored well when compared to males.

The disease accounts for 18 percent deaths in children < 5 years. Pneumonia kills more children than any other illness, more than measles,malaria and AIDS combined. Caring for children with pneumonia is a daunting task in resource-poorcountries where caregivers are required to pay for treatment ‘out of pocket’ at the point of care.Objectives: To assess the burden, social and economic consequences of childhood pneumonia and todetermine the risk factors associated with it.Methods : A cross sectional study was conducted among the 15 children admitted in Paediatrics Departmentof KIMS Hubli, with clinical evidence of pneumonia infections using a pretested, semi-structuredquestionnaire.Results: The incidence of childhood pneumonia was more among males (87%) and in rural population(54%). 53% were in the aged group of 1 and 5yrs. Overcrowding was present in 74%, indoor pollution in80% and outdoor pollution in 33%. 13% had to cancelled social gatherings and 54% had other impacts ontheir socialisation. 53% have taken external financial help for the treatment of pneumonia.Conclusion: Treatment of childhood pneumonia requires relatively more care and consequently moreresources to manage. The high costs of treatment puts a heavy financial burden on the family that necessitatethe need for preventive care interventions which could lead to a reduction in the number of disease cases anddecreased socio economic burden on the families
