Aldershot: Ashgate, 2009, 306 pp. $US 124.95 hardcover (978-0-7546-7709-3) In Re-Thinking Men, Anthony Synnott sets out to counter the increasing negativity directed toward men in feminist and masculinist scholarship by highlighting the accomplishments of men, and pointing out that they are both villains and heroes, victims as well as victimizers. Synnott argues that misandry, the new form of sexism, has become entrenched in North America and the United Kingdom, heavily supported by the media and within popular culture. Re-Thinking Men aims to broaden the traditional conceptualization of gender and gender relations through a lens of binary opposites through a more comparative perspective which reconsiders how men and women are more alike than different. Synnott addresses what he rightly perceives as a glaring gap in both feminist and masculinist research and scholarship, offering a humanist perspective on gender and gender relations. He concludes that this more balanced perspective is good for both women and men, moving us closer toward achieving true gender equality and justice.

The compatihility between groundcd theory and conceptual modeling is discusscd, and data from a short ethnographic study of a hair salon are used to illustrate the roles of conceptual modeling in the early stages of theory discovery. The major focus of conceptual modeling i s on three simultaneous, explicit, continuing respecification dialogues: the nature and dimensioiialization of concepts, the relative importance of concepts, and the nature of relationships among concepts. Wc argue that this focus facilitates the discovery and development of conceptually dense theories. ~~ ~~~ ~ ~~ ~ ~ Dirccl all correspondence to David Maines,

Specifically, messages concerning masculinity and the way in which proof and assertion of manhood are accomplished were investigated and compared to the culturally ideal version of masculinity. Findings revealed that the messages imparted by the WWE about manhood support the dominant hegemonic form of masculinity, which emphasizes aggression and violence, emotional restraint, and success and achievement. Popular culture messages about manhood that emphasize hegemonic masculinity have implications for alternative expressions of masculinity and potential gender role socialization, which are discussed.

With the exception of being portrayed as overly successful, television police were portrayed closely to real-life police in terms of their gender, racial composition, organization, tasks, role, and response to crime. As such, prime-time television may aid viewers in better understanding the role of police in American society by providing a basic orientation to police and police work through its mediated presentations. Further research is needed involving a more encompassing sample of prime-time justice shows for more generalizable conclusions to be asserted. t Direct all correspondence to Danielle M. Soulliere,
