Papers by Daniela Belmar
Palabras Clave: suicidio, Santiago, San Felipe, 1920, 1930, representación, afectos.
‘Give me my ring back or kill me’. Suicide and Emotion in Judicial Records of Santiago and San Felipe, 1920-1937.
The following article explores the representation of suicidal feelings, through letters and testimonies in suicide cases found in Santiago and San Felipe judicial records between 1920 and 1937. Resorting to the history of emotions and the history of traumatic events, the article argues that suicide is a traumatic experience that the historiography has tended to ignore. First, the article analyses the role that the criminal justice system played in suicide investigations, showing that judicial investigations in suicide cases were in fact administrative procedures that had no connection to legal issues. Subsequently, the article analyses 39 records that explicitly refer to the suicidal person's affective states.
Keywords: suicide, Santiago, San Felipe, 1920, 1930, representation, feelings.
