The book began as a project to mark the centenary of the Whitechurch Library, which opened on Taylor's Lane on St Patrick's Day, 1911. The ensuing years of war, rebellion and revolution saw the active involvement of many residents of the Rathfarnham area and individuals linked to the library. The essays in this collection provide a voice for the Rathfarnham experience of war, rebellion and revolution in early twentieth-century Ireland. It seeks to place them in their historical context and to understand them as they understood themselves. The Brothers emerged at a dynamic period in the history of the Irish Church. The last quarter of the eighteenth-century had brought a relaxation in the penal laws which allowed the Catholic church to emerge from the 'catacombs', thus facilitating its transition from a mission to a church. This thesis charts the role of the Brothers in that context; not simply as agents of change, but as individuals effected by the spirit of the age. It aims, also, to illustrate the complexity of the penal era. Long understood as a century of unrelenting and uniform persecution, the Catholic experience in the period (1691-1829) is now represented as one of 'endurance and emergence' in which Catholics adapted creatively to the challenges and opportunities of the age. From the dawn of Catholic Emancipation to the eve of the Great Famine, the life of Edmund Ignatiu... more From the dawn of Catholic Emancipation to the eve of the Great Famine, the life of Edmund Ignatius Rice (1762–1844) spanned a critical age in the emergence of Catholic Irish consciousness. In the history of schooling, it was a particularly significant period in which Catholic education emerged from the constraints of the Penal Laws and embraced the confident attributes associated with the Council of Trent (1545–1563) and subsequent reformers. Transported to Ireland, however, such uncompromising reforms assumed a political and sectarian character as an explicitly Catholic pedagogy emerged in the context of a nationalist advance and the bitter controversies of the ‘Bible Wars’ which established the tenor of the age.

It championed the values that the Christian Brothers had propagated since their foundation in 1802. Often characterised as Celtic and Romantic, it was neither, but aimed at promoting Catholic values to a global audience, in schools across the English-speaking world. Within the fledgling Irish State, however, it had a special role in fostering the Irish, Catholic values, which the founders of the state hoped would distinguish it from the old British regime. Yet, while Our Boys appeared triumphalist, in reality it was rooted in a chronic fear that those values would be rejected by the youth.

The less easily recoverable but no less vivid theology of Catholic righteousness is not subject to the same scrutiny, while crucial economic and political forces are likewise afforded but passing mention or, in the case of the sectarian legacy of the 1798 rebellion, ignored. Yet all are important because religious allegiance in Ireland was not only a matter of theological belief but also a political conviction. This is but one reason why they deserve detailed consideration, and why Nigel Yates's ambitious comparison of the restructuring of the three main denominations is to be welcomed on many levels for posing important new questions, as well as expanding on the answers previously provided for older ones.

The human toll of "Black '47," the worst year of the famine, is notorious, but the lives of the emigrants themselves have remained largely hidden, untold because of their previous obscurity and deep poverty. In The End of Hidden Ireland, Scally brings their lives to light. Focusing on the townland of Ballykilcline in Roscommon, Scally offers a richly detailed portrait of Irish rural life on the eve of the catastrophe. From their internal lives and values, to their violent conflict with the English Crown, from rent strikes to the potato blight, he takes the emigrants on each stage of their journey out of Ireland to New York. 2007 marks the bicentenary of the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act of 1807, While it was a landma... more 2007 marks the bicentenary of the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act of 1807, While it was a landmark act, it did not bring an end to the institution of slavery which continued to flourish in the Americas for another half-century. This article gives an overview of historical slavery, from the slavery of ancient societies to the commerce in enslaved Africans that contributed to European prosperity from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries. It examines the role of Ireland and the Irish in this trade and looks at the development of the abolitionist movement. The persistence of slavery as part of today's globalised economy is discussed and some suggestions are made to facilitate the exploration of this topic with students.

This article gives an overview of historical slavery, from the slavery of ancient societies to the commerce in enslaved Africans that contributed to European prosperity from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries. It examines the role of Ireland and the Irish in this trade and looks at the development of the abolitionist movement.
