Cemento-ossifying fibroma is a benign fibrous lesion with an unknown cause, mostly asymptomatic, ... more Cemento-ossifying fibroma is a benign fibrous lesion with an unknown cause, mostly asymptomatic, painless swelling of the affected jaw. This is a case report on a cystic lesion found on radiographic examination in a patient with an extraction of mandibular left tooth. A 29-year-old female was referred to Pusan National University Dental Hospital due to a radiopaque lesion in the left mandible. On the medical history examination, the left lower mandibular tooth had been extracted 4 years ago, and there were no specific findings in the general medical history. According to histopathologic findings, along with proliferation of spindle cells, cementum-like substances were observed along with irregularly shaped osseous calcified substances containing osteocytes in the cellular fibrous connective tissue. In this study, we report a case that showed cystic changes due to tooth extraction, which made it complicated to determine the differential diagnosis from the existing fibrous-osseous lesion.

B... more Bisphosphonate is the primary cause of bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ). Bisphosphonates are eliminated from the human body by the kidneys. It is anticipated that bisphosphonate levels in the body will increase if the kidney is in a weak state or if there is systemic disease that affects kidney function. The aim of this study was to analyze the relevance of renal function in the severity of BRONJ. Ninety-three patients diagnosed with BRONJ in Pusan National University Dental Hospital from January 2012 to December 2014 were included in this study. All patients underwent a clinical exam, radiographs, and serologic lab test, including urine analysis. The patient's medical history was also taken, including the type of bisphosphonate drug, the duration of administration and drug holiday, route of administration, and other systemic diseases. Human periosteal-derived stem cells were harvested from the mandible during the extraction of an impacted third molar. Using the new bioreactor, 4% cyclic equibiaxial tension force (0.5 Hz) was applied for 2 and 8 h on the stem cells and cultured for 3, 7, and 14 days on the osteogenic medium. This study examined 1,742 patients with oral and maxillofacial lacerations with 2,014 different laceration locations who visited the emergency room of Pusan National University Hospital (Busan, Korea) over three years, from January 2011 to December 2013. Patients were classified by sex, age, visit day, cause of injury, injury site, and the presence or absence of soft tissue and tooth injuries. The male to female ratio was 2.50:1. Patients under 10 years old were seen most frequently. Most emergency room visits were on weekends. Among intra-oral lacerations, the lip area was the most vulnerable site; among extra-oral lacerations, the chin area was most frequently injured. The most frequent etiology was a slip down. Bony-volume expansion and soft tissue atrophy are considered the main etiological causes of this condition. Enophthalmos is corrected mostly through reducing the enlarged orbit volume. Autogenous graft and various alloplastic materials are used for this purpose. Porous polyethylene is highly biocompatible, durable, and remarkably stable. Also, the titanium plate embedded in a porous polyethylene sheet provides radiographic visibility and increased sheet strength and contour retention. We present experiences of titanium reinforced porous polyethylene for correction of the traumatic enophthalmos with literature review.

Methods: Expression of integrin , EGFR on human SCC cells (SCC25) were examined by western blot. SCC25 cells were treated with anti-integrin , anti-EGFR and analysed by Hemacolor staining, immunoflorescence staining, FACS flow cytometry. Conjugated GNP with integrin , EGFR antibody were treated by air plasma on SCC cells. Results: Integrin and EGFR were over-expressed on SCC25 cells than normal lung WI-38 cells. The cell viability rate of SCC25 cells treated with anti-integrin , anti-EGFR was lower than WI-38 cells. The p16 gene is involved in the p16/cyclin-dependent kinase/retinoblastoma (Rb) gene pathway of cell cycle control. The p16 protein is considered a negative regulator of this pathway. The p16 gene encodes an inhibitor of cyclin-dependent kinases 4 and 6 which regulate the phosphorylation of the retinoblastoma gene and G1 to S phase transition in the cell cycle. However, the p16 gene can lose its functionality through point mutations, loss of heterozygosity or methylation of its promoter region.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most common malignant tumor in the oral cavity, and it accou... more Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most common malignant tumor in the oral cavity, and it accounts for about 90% of all oral cancers. Several risk factors for oral SCC have been identified; however, SCC associated with odontogenic keratocysts have rarely been reported. The present study describes the case of a 36-year-old man with SCC of the right ramus of the mandible, which was initially diagnosed as a benign odontogenic cyst. He underwent enucleation at another hospital followed by segmental mandibulectomy and fibular free flap reconstruction at our institution. In this case, we introduce a patient with oral cancer associated with odontogenic cyst on the mandible and report a satisfactory outcome with wide resection and immediate free flap reconstruction.

Hemifacial microsomia (HFM) is the most common craniofacial anomaly after cleft lip and cleft pal... more Hemifacial microsomia (HFM) is the most common craniofacial anomaly after cleft lip and cleft palate; this deformity primarily involves the facial skeleton and ear, with either underdevelopment or absence of both components. In patients with HFM, the management of the asymmetries requires a series of treatment phases that focus on their interception and correction, such as distraction osteogenesis or functional appliance treatment during growth and presurgical orthodontic treatment followed by mandibular and maxillary surgery. Satisfactory results were obtained in a 9-year-old girl with HFM who was treated with distraction osteogenesis. At the age of 19, genioplasty and mandible body augmentation with a porous polyethylene implant (PPE, Medpor®, Porex) was sequentially performed for the functional and esthetic reconstruction of the face. We report a case of HFM with a review of the literature.

Bilateral round-shaped defects (diameter 8.0 mm) were formed in the maxillary anterior sinus walls of 36 New Zealand white rabbits. The defects were grafted with TCP only (control group), with rhBMP-2-coated TCP (experimental group A) and with PRF-mixed TCP (experimental group B). Each group included 12 rabbits. The animals were killed at 3 days, 1 week, 2 weeks, 4 weeks, 6 weeks, and 8 weeks. The specimens underwent decalcification and were stained for histologic analysis. When a displacement of the orbital roof and supraorbital rim occurs, exploration, stabilization and reconstruction are warranted to limit the ocular complications. The management of fractures involving the frontal sinus must consider the possible need for obliteration or cranialization of the sinus. Many incisions have been described and used to approach these fractures, such as a coronal incision, eyebrow incision, and an incision through the laceration. We report 3 cases of orbital roof and supraorbital ridge fracture patients with a review of the relevant literature.
