Les applications d'apprentissage intelligent des langues assisté par ordinateur (AILAO) sont une ... more Les applications d'apprentissage intelligent des langues assisté par ordinateur (AILAO) sont une voie relativement nouvelle d'apprentissage des langues assisté par ordinateur (ALAO). L'ALAO permet aux apprenants d'une langue d'exé cuter un vaste éventail d'exercices grammaticaux et de re cevoir des commentaires rétroactifs quant à leurs ré ponses, en dehors des heures de cours. L'ALAO est essentiel à la production dynamique de ces exer cices pour les langues autochtones polysynthétiques dont la morphologie est complexe. Afin de mieux comprendre les perceptions et les comportements des utilisateurs en contexte d'AILAO, des usagers de la nêhiyawêtân (une application d'AILAO de niveau universitaire qui s'adresse aux Cris des Plaines) sont appelés à évaluer en profondeur cette application. Cinq appre nants du cri des Plaines langue seconde sont enregistrés alors qu'ils utilisent la nêhiyawêtân dans l'exécution de divers exercices grammaticaux. Ils sont invités à formuler à voix haute leurs opinions, leurs réflexions et leurs obser vations. Par la suite, les réactions et les stratégies des usagers qui ont été ob servées sont enregistrées, ce qui révèle aux auteurs quelles sont les erreurs, les stratégies et les préfé rences des usagers potentiels et leur permet d'améliorer les commentaires rétroactifs et la conception de même que l'interface des modèles d'exercices proposés. Au surplus, les ré sultats des sondages menés par les auteurs et leurs observations mettent en lumière des facteurs sociocul turels qui n'apparaissent pas dans les applications d'ALAO grand public rela tives aux langues majoritaires. Cette évaluation, souhaitent les auteurs, servira de guide dans celle des futurs programmes d'AILAO relatifs aux langues autochtones et autres langues minoritaires.

Although fundamentally the determination of grammatical gender in a language such as French is based on recognising certain distributional patterns, a noun's phonological ending has also been implicated as providing an important additional cue as to an unknown noun's gender value. Not only does the literature which explores this possibility rarely make precise the notion of ''final sounds'' but also those that are referred to appear not to be consonant with either phonological or psycholinguistic theory. This paper explores the suitability of the final syllable as a reliable cue. The issue is investigated through an instance-based machine learning model, in part because it more closely fits with psycholinguistic assumptions of gender processing. The results of the simulations show that not only does the final syllable prove a reliable indicator but that it is, in fact, more reliable than most other sequences. The paper, however, remains agnostic as to the exact role of analogising in either gender acquisition or gender processing. Tentative suggestions are made that gender attribution may require a dual mechanism account.

Sokolik and Smith (1992) report on a connectionist model of the acquisition of French gender attr... more Sokolik and Smith (1992) report on a connectionist model of the acquisition of French gender attribution which has been widely reported to have shown that such models are ‘capable of learning the gender of a large set of French nouns’. These claims are examined by reference to various results gained through a number of extensions to their network model. These results suggest a degree of caution in accepting Sokolik and Smith's conclusions. Further discussion suggests that the search for a computational account of gender attribution is, perhaps, misguided.
