The abandoned mine openings (AMO) mapping project has a goal to locate a number estimated of 1000... more The abandoned mine openings (AMO) mapping project has a goal to locate a number estimated of 1000 coal mine openings. Within an experimental area 173 abandoned openings were mapped, surrounding the city of Criciuma, in southern portion of Santa Catarina State in Brazil. A total of 18 of these openings discharge, in average, 1,334 m³/hour of acid mine drainage (AMD) that flows to watersheds carrying high level of metals, acidity and sulfates. A model of underground water flow was established through structural geology, and a digital terrain model (DTM) from the surface and mine floor, aiming to identify openings that collect surface water, and openings that discharge AMD. Openings started to be closed according to risks to safety, health and the environment. A monitoring program has been established since 2002 to quantify physical and chemical characteristics, and flow rates from discharges. This study aims to assess methane (CH 4) and carbon dioxide (CO 2) concentrations in the ventilat... more This study aims to assess methane (CH 4) and carbon dioxide (CO 2) concentrations in the ventilation systems of two coal mines (A and B) in the Santa Catarina coal deposit in southern Brazil (Paraná Basin, Bonito Formation), and estimate their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The highest CH 4 levels (1.8%) were recorded in strong methane emanation areas in mine A, below the lower explosive limit (5%). The IPCCrecommended methods significantly overestimated the methane emission (up to 80%) when compared to the experimental data measured for each mine. Application of an alternative method made it possible to estimate direct CO 2 emissions, indicating that CO 2 accounted for 22 to 77% of total GHG emissions. Carbon dioxide emissions are generally not included in GHG emission inventories, indicating that the coal industry underestimates the contribution of this gas. As such, it is recommended that the methodology used for these calculations be revised and that specific emission factors be applied for each mine. In order to improve the accuracy of inventories, more sampling needs to be carried out in all operational and abandoned mines.

Abstract : A new optimally addressed spatial light modulator (OASLM) with memorized gray-scale ca... more Abstract : A new optimally addressed spatial light modulator (OASLM) with memorized gray-scale capability has been developed, which has potential application in analog optical computing. This OASLM exploits the occurrence of a gray-scale effect in the memory state of surface stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal (SSFLC) cells when the SSFLc is oriented by ultra-thin polyimide Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films. In the case of LB orientation films, the gray-scale can be attributed to the topography of the substrate ITO films which produces spatial fluctuation in the spontaneous polarization (multidomain). The OASLM has many pixels, each corresponding to the smallest unit of the multidomain gray-scale. Because it is possible to add switching devices such as thin film transistors to the pixels, the OASLM has the potential of particularly designed functions.

Herein we will demonstrate how the electrooptic bistability of FLC materials can be used to implement bipolar optical neural networks, based on simple FLC cells that act as the neurons and as the interconnections among them.

The southern side of the Ponta Grossa Arch (PGA), a prominent NW-SE-trending tectonic feature ext... more The southern side of the Ponta Grossa Arch (PGA), a prominent NW-SE-trending tectonic feature extending over 600 km, was the site of important alkaline and alkaline-carbonatitic magmatic activity in Early and Late Cretaceous times. Occurrences associated with two of their lineaments (Guapiara and São Jerônimo-Curiúva) are quite variable in composition and include the following rock associations: ultramafic-mafic, syenitic, carbonatitic, fine-grained rocks (dikes), and fenites. Except for Tunas complex and some more evolved dikes outcropping in the area of Cerro Azul, which show sodic composition, the remaining rocks are clearly of potassic affinity. Crystal fractionation and accumulation processes played a major role in the formation and evolution of the PGA rocks, whereas crustal contamination or AFC seems to be restricted to the Cananeia lithotypes and a few dikes associated with the Juquiá and Tunas complexes. Furthermore, liquid immiscibility from silicate magmas is believed to be responsible for the formation of carbonatites in mostly alkaline and alkaline-carbonatitic complexes. The silicate rocks generally have higher Sri and lower Ndi, lying mainly in the enriched quadrant. Similar isotopic signatures are displayed by the associated carbonatites. TDM model ages indicate that the PGA alkaline magmatism appears to be related to a lithospheric mantle source that suffered important metasomatic events, leading to its enrichment by incompatible elements and H-C-F-rich fluids.
