Selected events feature one electron or muon, missing transverse momentum, and two or three jets, exactly one of them identified as originating from a b quark. The cross section is measured by fitting the distribution of a multivariate discriminant constructed with a neural network, yielding σ t = 83 ± 4 (stat.) +20 −19 (syst.) pb, which is in good agreement with the prediction of the Standard Model. Using the ratio of the measured to the theoretically predicted cross section and assuming that the top-quarkrelated CKM matrix elements obey the relation |V tb | ≫ |V ts |, |V td |, the coupling strength at the W-t-b vertex is determined to be |V tb | = 1.13 +0.14 −0.13 . If it is assumed that |V tb | ≤ 1 a lower limit of |V tb | > 0.75 is obtained at the 95% confidence level.
This Letter presents a search for tb resonances in 1.04 fb −1 of LHC proton-proton collision data... more This Letter presents a search for tb resonances in 1.04 fb −1 of LHC proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS detector at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. Events with a lepton, missing transverse momentum, and two jets are selected and the invariant mass of the corresponding final state is reconstructed. The search exploits the shape of the tb invariant mass distribution compared to the expected Standard Model backgrounds. The model of a right-handed W ′ R with Standard Modellike couplings is chosen as the benchmark model for this search. No statistically significant excess of events is observed in data, and upper limits on the cross section times the branching ratio of W ′ R resonances at 95% CL lie in the range 6.1-1.0 pb for W ′ R masses ranging from 0.5 to 2.0 TeV. These limits are translated into a lower bound on the allowed right-handed W ′ R mass, giving m W ′ R > 1.13 TeV at 95% CL.
As an economical alternative for the concentration of heat sensitive materials, the climbing-fall... more As an economical alternative for the concentration of heat sensitive materials, the climbing-falling-film plate evaporator was used for the first time in 1958. Nevertheless, there seems to be little information in the literature about such equipment. In this paper, an algorithm for the steady-state simulation of this evaporator is presented, which takes into account a general unit with n sets of four plates, whose feed can be at a temperature equal, inferior or superior to its saturation value for the operating pressure. The heating fluid, steam, can be fed either in a saturated or superheated state, with the possibility of condensate subcooling within the equipment channels. Initially, the algorithm was tested for simulating a sample unit at different operating conditions, and the physical consistency of the obtained results was analysed. The efficiency of the developed model was then demonstrated by the successful simulation of six industrial units used for concentrating milk in a Brazilian milk powder plant. Ó

The data were recorded by the ATLAS experiment in √ s = 7 TeV proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider. No excess above the Standard Model background expectation was observed in 2.05 fb −1 of data. The results are interpreted in the context of gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking models with M mess = 250 TeV, N 5 = 3, µ > 0, and C grav = 1. The production of supersymmetric particles is excluded at 95% C.L. up to a supersymmetry breaking scale Λ = 30 TeV, independent of tan β, and up to Λ = 43 TeV for large tan β.

The temperature profiles are calculated using the numerical method originally proposed by T. Zaleski, K. Klepacka [J. Mass Heat Transfer 35 , which approximates the solution for each channel by a linear combination of exponential functions. In order to validate the developed algorithm, simulation results were compared with exact analytical solutions available for simple cases and experimental data. Once validated, the algorithm was successfully utilised to simulate the steady-state operation of an industrial plate heat exchanger used for pasteurising milk. Ó
We have studied the genomic organization and expression of the gene encoding a high molecular mas... more We have studied the genomic organization and expression of the gene encoding a high molecular mass (300 kDa) repetitive antigen associated with the cytoskeleton of Trypunosoma cruzi. Protease digestion of the native protein, restriction analysis of genomic DNA and sequencing of genomic and cDNA clones indicated that most of the protein is built up by tandemly arranged, nearly identical repeats of 68 amino acids. The gene size was estimated to be approx. 9.4 kb based on the sixes of the transcript and the native protein. The nucleotide sequence conservation among the repeats indicates that selective sequence homogenization, presumably through gene conversion, maintained the amino-acid sequence conservation. Two duplicated allelic forms of this gene were mapped in fragments of about 20 kb. In some strains an additional allele was located in a fragment of 9.4 kb. Our results suggest that this repetitive antigen is a structural protein which could be involved in the attachment of the flagellum to the cell body.

No excess beyond Standard Model expectations is observed, and upper limits on the fiducial cross sections for non-Standard Model production of these final states are set. Using models for string ball and black hole production and decay, exclusion contours are determined as a function of mass threshold and the fundamental gravity scale.
