The authors discuss the relationship between linguistics and theosophy, a mystical movement in which some eminent linguists of the 19th–20th century were involved. The authors sketch some influences of theosophy on later theories in language, beginning with the founding of the Theosophical Society by H. P. Blavatsky in the US in 1875 and continuing through to its influence in France, Germany, and Austria. The need to accept the links between linguistics and political and social movements of all kinds is noted. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2012 APA, all rights reserved)
