In view of the wide-spread uncertainty regarding the content of religious education, the author p... more In view of the wide-spread uncertainty regarding the content of religious education, the author proposes a concept of religious education based on both of the fundamental practices of the Christian faith: praying and blessing or being blessed. He gives his reasons for this concept, reasons pertaining to education and to theology, and shows its relevance for those various places in which religion is taught.

Instead of previous determination by “pastor”, “church”, “religion” and “practice”, the article proposes “communication of the gospel”. “Communication” opens practical-theological theory to empirical research, “gospel” to theology. This determination with contemporary relevance leads to a new formatting of Practical Theology which is at the same time closer to the empirically knowable lifeworld as well as to theological insights. Traditional pastoral theology becomes theory of the activities which support the communication of the gospel; ecclesiology becomes theory of the social forms within which the gospel is communicated. In this volume, originally written in German, Grethlein (2016) builds a systematic and summarised... more In this volume, originally written in German, Grethlein (2016) builds a systematic and summarised argument for a Practical Theology oriented to the international platform and integrated with ecclesial aspects (p. vii). Nevertheless, the book is mainly aimed at addressing the most pertinent issues within the German context, from where it has developed over a period of 200 years (p. vii-viii). Grethlein (p. viii) himself states in the foreword that his arguments "are based on observations that practical-theological theorizing and, in consequence, ecclesial praxis are encumbered with an imprecise terminology that impedes an accurate and theologically reflected perception of present-day reality". This provides the basis for the imperative of this book, in which the author compares the profile of Practical Theology, as developed in Germany, to that of Practical Theology in the Catholic Church and in the United States of America, with the aim of developing a communication theory-oriented analysis that is sensitive to the particularities of different contexts, but still reveals the innovative potential inherent in Jesus' appearance, ministry and destiny, particularly for the development of Practical Theology (p. viii).

Die Inquisition verfolgte einen jungen Wittenberger Theologieprofessor und seine Lehre. So kam geschichtlich der Prozess in Gang, der schlieslich zu der bis heute reichenden Teilung der westlichen Christenheit fuhrte.
