Despite the public opinion of his far-left political views, fashion design and music being so controversial, his idealistic vision of how society could be remained consistent throughout the course of his career. Using primary and secondary research, I discover how he influenced popular culture within the young people of London in regard to music, fashion and politics. Being such a venerable place at the time due to political suppression, London's youth culture was mostly unhappy with the way things were and it was bound to be exposed to an extreme cultural change. My primary data, conducting an interview with Lisa, evidenced the anti-social behaviour caused by McLaren at his store during his generation. The society of London generally behaved against liberalism and this attitude had become despised by the younger generation who wanted more freedom and individuality. The purpose of this thesis is to explore how McLaren's ideas and actions influenced the subculture he did, what this meant for younger generations and how this has changed what we know today about the culture of London. Following the story of McLaren's personal endeavours to the career choices he made as a fashion designer, band manager and even an artist himself, I will successfully shine a light on this neglected area which is within a pinacol part of London's history.
