Reverse logistics programs are being used to recover assets that would otherwise be lost. Research results are presented covering reverse logistics programs in the electronics industry, specifically among firms selling through catalogs. The paper looks at how reverse logistics performance and satisfaction with reverse logistics service are influenced by industry, firm size/sales volume, and internal or external assignment of responsibility for disposition. The results are mixed. Performance is significantly impacted by sales volume, while industry effects significantly impact satisfaction. Neither performance nor satisfaction was significantly influenced by location of responsibility for disposition.

One avenue, the development of collaborative relational capabilities that support supply chain integration, offers promise. However, the effectiveness of collaboration as a supply chain resource has been questioned due to concerns associated with collaborative technologies, and thus prior research has called for a deeper examination of the role that technologies play in facilitating integration. Employing a Service-Dominant Logic view of hierarchical resources, grounded in Resource Advantage Theory, this research tests a model subsuming relationships between collaboration, integration, and interfirm coordination technologies, and their associated performance outcomes. A sample of 282 supply chain managers from a variety of industries were surveyed, with proposed relationships examined employing structural equation modeling. Test results indicate that collaboration and integration interact to form higher order resources that collectively influence firm performance outcomes through interfirm coordination technologies.

Our research is specifically focused on the impact that logistics service provider (LSP) implantation has on logistics service innovation for the customer. In a dyadic study pairing 81 LSP implants with their customers, we assess the direct linkage of interorganizational task interdependence, as well as the mediating effects of relational social capital and knowledge exchange on the logistics service innovation of the customer. Empirical analysis revealed significantly more logistics innovation for those customers hosting implants. The logistics innovation is attributable to fully mediated relational social capital and knowledge exchange capabilities in the implantation relationship. Managerial directions related to our findings, as well as possibilities for future implantation-related research, are discussed.

We collect and utilize a unique dataset consisting of a total of 479 manufacturing, retail, and service provider firms operating in three distinct national cultures: China, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States of America. Based on an exploratory empirical analysis, we observe evidence that, overall, firms that consider social responsibility aspects during the supplier selection process enjoy financial performance advantages versus rivals. However, model comparisons across the studied countries reveal differential outcomes of SRSS by region. Our findings aid supply chain managers by linking SRSS to commonly expected outcomes within these important national settings.

Global competition and maturing domestic markets have driven supply-chain members to reassess their distribution techniques to remain competitive in the market. Firms need inventory replenishment systems that enhance customer service whereas at the same time reduce inventory costs. Many retailers are demanding time-phased replenishment. They want delivery

Earlier occurrences such as the repeated pandemics of the bubonic plague, the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, the Irish potato famine, and the 1777 Lisbon Earthquake each dramatically impacted the way civilizations formed, grew, lived, and interacted. Despite the temporally increasing efforts of humans to prepare for such disasters, and although many of the most prominent and well known disasters affecting human societies occurred long ago, large scale catastrophes have remained to some extent a constant, impacting cultures around the world throughout history and up to the present day (Quinn 2003). This chapter presents a framework documenting business continuity planning capabilities that are thought to engender firm-level benefits. The context is that of supply chain management. Thus, in this chapter, we seek to address the following question: What categories or types of capability development should businesses focus on in seeking to secure their supply chains, and thereby ensure continuity of operations? In order to answer this question, we first introduce the concepts surrounding the focal context – those of supply chain security and supply chain security management, and the development of firm-level capabilities. Then, a conceptual framework is introduced that integrates the technology, processes, and human resources needed to develop supply chain security management capabilities, and thereby support business continuity planning in future business operations.

Design/methodology/approach – Data for this study were obtained from a field survey. A mail questionnaire was constructed that contained items measuring the five key constructs of interest. Based on the supply chain information literature and the relational view, two competing models linking the focal constructs using structural equation modeling were evaluated. Findings – The results of the study indicate that buyer-to-supplier information sharing, buyer-to-supplier performance feedback, and buyer investment in inter-organizational information technology are key enablers of buyer-to-supplier communication openness. However, only buyer-to-supplier communication openness plays the direct and critical role in achieving significant performance improvement. Research limitations/implications – In this study performance is only examined from the supplier's perspective. It would be valuable to reevaluate and compare the performance outcomes from a buyer's perspective as well, or even more significantly, to compare these findings in a dyadic study where paired buyer and supplier data are collected over time to establish a pattern governing these efforts. Practical implications – The fact that investments in the buyer-side information resources engender supplier-side competitiveness provides an incentive for suppliers to assist buyers in their investments in buyer-side information resources. The study provides validation for the positive impact of such investments on supplier performance, therefore reassuring suppliers that their contribution to the dyad will pay off. Originality/value – While information connectivity between buyers and suppliers has long been considered a critical enabler of buyer-supplier integration, research had yet to explore the relationship between buyer investments in interorganizational information initiatives and supplier performance. The paper has addressed this gap.

The new dimensions of SWOT are proposed to address the logical inconsistencies faced by marketing managers synthesizing SWOT components. By representing SWOT as the focus of practitioners’ cognition, researchers and consultants can capture the variability in managerial core logic employed to integrate
