The damping of standing slow mode oscillations in hot (T > 6 MK) coronal loops is described in th... more The damping of standing slow mode oscillations in hot (T > 6 MK) coronal loops is described in the linear limit. The effects of energy dissipation by thermal conduction, viscosity, and radiative losses and gains are examined for both stratified and nonstratified loops. We find that thermal conduction acts on the way of increasing the period of the oscillations over the sound crossing time, whereas the decay times are mostly determined by viscous dissipation. Thermal conduction alone results in slower damping of the density and velocity waves compared to the observations. Only when viscosity is added do these waves damp out at the same rate of the observed SUMER loop oscillations. In the linear limit, the periods and decay times are barely affected by gravity.
Changes in chemical properties of nanoscale particles include quantum size effect, changes in the... more Changes in chemical properties of nanoscale particles include quantum size effect, changes in the cell parameters and lattice symmetry, and surface and interface effects. In the case of layered double hydroxides (LDHs), surface and interface effects dominate for nanoparticles of MgAl LDHs. Using TEM micrographs of nanoparticle-sized LDHs, we have found that the increased number of surface atoms relative to the internal atoms increases the surface-to-surface interparticle attractions. As a result, nanosize LDH particles are able to form continuous oriented films that adhere well to a polar substrate.
As a step to address the problems of coastal fisheries in Asia, the WorldFish Center joined force... more As a step to address the problems of coastal fisheries in Asia, the WorldFish Center joined forces with fisheries agencies from eight developing Asian countries (Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, The Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam) and the Asian Development Bank, to implement a project entitled "Sustainable Management of Coastal Fish Stocks in Asia" (also known as the "TrawlBase" project). The project was implemented between 1998 and 2001. The main achievements of this partnership were: (a) Development of a database called "Fisheries Resource Information System and Tools" (FiRST), which contains trawl research survey data and socioeconomic information for selected fisheries, and facilitates its analysis; (b) Evaluation of the extent of resource decline and overfishing, both biological and economic, in the region; (c) Identification of the measures needed to manage coastal fisheries in the participating countries, resulting in draft strategies and action plans; and (d) Strengthening of national capacity in coastal fisheries assessment, planning and management. Se presenta el estudio técnico-económico para la obtención de ácido sulfúrico por medio del proce... more Se presenta el estudio técnico-económico para la obtención de ácido sulfúrico por medio del proceso de contacto doble. Con base en las características de los gases residuales generados por la tostación de piritas se selecciona la tecnología de limpieza del efluente y el proceso de producción de ácido sulfúrico. Para la limpieza de los gases se establece utilizar un tren de separación conformado por un separador ciclónico, un lavador Venturi, un eliminador de neblina y dos precipitadores electrostáticos de neblina ácida. Además, para la síntesis de trióxido de azufre se diseña un convertidor catalítico de cuatro camas. Finalmente, se presentan la estimación de los costos de capital y la factibilidad económica para dos concentraciones de producto.
