On one hand, mythical women involve symbolic attributes (mythological, biblical, historical and legendary ones); on the other, they are described by the dialectic of contradictories (mythical and real, perfect and lethal, monstrous and beautiful, sacred and demonic). Divine or earthly, fascinating or repulsive, the female figures inspired on ancient goddess or legendary creatures (like Eve, Venus, Galatea, Leda, Salome, Helen, Judith, Cleopatra, Ophelia, but also Melusine, Sirens, Chimeras and Nereids) maintain a deep connection with the artist's soul and lead to a renewal in poetic language. We will explore some of these mythical women and their artistic representation during the fin-de-siècle epoch.
