In so doing, it emphasizes both the importance of combining quantitative and qualitative intra-household data, as well as taking a longitudinal perspective rather than at a single point in time. This paper seeks to examine the relationship not only between gender and urban income poverty but also, more importantly, between gender and urban asset accumulation, illustrating how the combination of quantitative econometric measurement of assets and qualitative in-depth anthropological findings on the complex underlying gender relations both contribute to a far more comprehensive analysis of asset accumulation processes in urban contexts than can be gained from any single methodological approach.

The problem is not lim- ited to urban areas—the region is one of the most violent of the world— but it is particularly problematic in urban areas, where the relationship be- tween violence and poverty is neither unidirectional nor straightforward. In urban areas in Latin America and the Caribbean, the poor are the most likely to both be seriously affected by crime violence and be held respon- sible for the crime and violence committed. This presents challenges for identifying successful urban-focused violence reduction interventions. This chapter first looks at categories of violence, introducing an urban violence roadmap. It then discusses the measurement, trends, and charac- teristics of urban violence. The third section examines the causes, costs, and consequences of the phenomenon, particularl...

This paper describes the development of gender planning, which in identifying that women and men play different roles in Third World society and therefore often have different needs, provides both the conceptual framework and the methodological tools for incorporating gender into planning.

This paper contributes to the extensive vulnerability/assets literature, by categorizing the assets of the urban poor in terms of an 'asset vulnerability framework'. These include both tangible assets, such as labor and human capital, less familiar productive assets, such as housing, as well as intangible assets, such as household relations and social capital. Results from a recent urban study show that the poor are managers of complex asset portfolios, and illustrate how asset management affects household poverty and vulnerability. Translated into operational practice this framework facilitates interventions promoting opportunities, as well as removing obstacles, to ensure the urban poor use their assets more productively.

Current research on the impacts of the 2007 global economic crisis on international migration tak... more Current research on the impacts of the 2007 global economic crisis on international migration takes two different positions. Some studies emphasize the negative impacts while others are more positive. This article argues that these two positions offer simplistic interpretations which fail to take account of the complex micro-level realities that determine migrant experiences. The article discusses how a small group of migrants from Guayaquil, Ecuador, accumulate and consolidate a complex portfolio of assets both before and during the economic crisis in Spain. Conceptualized in terms of an asset accumulation framework, and based on micro-level longitudinal trend data, rather than the more generally used macro-level snapshots or anecdotal evidence, the study highlights the fact that the formalization of legal status or citizenship is a crucial pre-condition, which sets in motion a ‘virtuous’ cycle of consolidation of an interrelated portfolio of assets, regardless of the wider macro-economic environment. Even if this turns into a ‘vicious’ cycle, for those losing jobs, to date Spanish welfare benefits have acted as a social protection mechanism.
