The primary objective of this chapter is to review the studies that correlate emotional intelligence with occupational/job performance. The chapter aims to explore the emotional aspects of intelligence and its related outcomes on employees' performance. Intelligence is considered as an important variable for analyzing workers' capabilities and behaviors necessary to perform a particular task. It is briefly explained what emotional intelligence (EI) is, how it is measured and why it is important in organizations and, specifically, in occupational performance. The case of leadership is also specified.
The chapter reveals interesting findings about the nature of the relationship between individuals' emotional intelligence and their respective performance in the workplace. It also opens the way to the development of innovative management practices. The chapter proposes that emotional intelligence can be used as an approach for attaining organizational results by promoting appropriate workers' behaviors.

Although initially the basic concern was at the level of environmental sustainability, the truth is that, progressively, education for sustainability, deeply linked to the science of sustainability, constitutes, together with the latter, the scientific basis for education for the sustainability in higher education, thus emerging a research niche capable of providing greater openness and interaction between higher education institutions and their surroundings. Main aims of the study: Due to the importance that this issue assumes, this article seeks to address the issue of sustainability in higher education, giving particular focus to the analysis at the level of studies that have been developed, which are the main countries and institutions where this has been most researched, as well as which main researchers have been working on this issue. Methodology: For this purpose, and using information taken from the Scopus Database, a bibliometric analysis was carried out, which based on the items "higher education" and "sustainability" allowed to identify a set of 4410 publications. Main results: The results obtained allow to conclude that the number of publications in this area has been observing a significant increase over the last 30 years, with the United States, UK, Spain, Australia and Germany emerging as the countries which publish the most, and within these the Leuphana Universitat Luneburg, RMIT, Hochschule fur Angewandte Wissenschaften Hamburg, Manchester Metropolitan and the Arizona State universities that most publish in this field of research. The five main researchers in the field of higher education for sustainability, were also highlighted. Main contributions: Theoretical and practical contributions were highlighgted, namely, the contribution for government entities and the respective HEIs to reflect on the possible synergies to be developed, as well as to establish strategies and policies promoters of a more efficient and effective investment in research in higher education for sustainability.

Supported by a literature review, the present article looks to address the issue of sustainabilit... more Supported by a literature review, the present article looks to address the issue of sustainability in the modernization of higher education. Education for sustainability and the encouragement of a sustainable lifestyle are increasingly present in the academic and professional training of individuals. Progressively more responsible for the environment in which they operate, individuals, in order to preserve their quality of life and, above all, ensure quality of life for future generations, begin to assume new behaviors, such as the rationalization of energy and water consumption, reducing the use of paper, recycling products, and eliminating the use of plastics, among other behavioral changes. In this context, considering higher education institutions as a vital source for the development of sustainability and, consequently, a key lever in the definition and implementation of strategies conducive to sustainable development, it is through the teaching, training, research, and development carried out by them that these behavioral changes occur. Aware of this issue's relevance, the present article, consisting of a critical review of the literature, seeks to answer a set of questions, such as "What role do academic managers, teachers and students assume in the search for sustainability?"; "What measures/actions have been developed by the HEIs in terms of curricula reform and the promotion of a sustainable campus?"; "What sustainability metrics are used in higher education?". Giving particular emphasis to some studies about sustainability in different HEIs, the results of the research allow us to conclude that education for sustainability is seen as a tool of crucial importance in the current decade of the 21st century.

Purpose: As of May 25, 2018, General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) has become mandatory for all organizations, public or private, that handle personal data of European citizens, regardless of their physical location. Higher education institutions (HEIs), namely public universities, are no exception to this requirement and, as in many other organizations, many HEIs begin the process of implementing the GDPR without meeting the minimum conditions necessary for implementation. The purpose of this study, therefore, is to present a model to determine the level of readiness of HEIs regarding the implementation of the GDPR. Study design/methodology/approach: With the objective of designing a new artefact as a readiness model for the implementation of the GDPR, this study follows Design Science Research as an approach to be used to build the readiness model, based on a set of 16 critical success factors (CSFs) previously determined. Findings/conclusions: A readiness model was designed, based on a set of 16 CSFs related to the implementation of GDPR in HEIs. Limitations/future research: This is a new area of study that needs further development, namely through the practical application of the model, allowing the improvement of the measurement levels of the different CSFs. Practical implications: The determined readiness model allows HEIs to realize a priori if they have the necessary conditions for the implementation of the GDPR, giving useful indications of the organizational dimensions and the CSFs that compose them where better performance is necessary to ensure a successful implementation. Originality/Value: As far as we know, this is the first model of readiness based on CSFs related to the implementation of GDPR in HEIs, being therefore a first contribution to the development of this area. Effectively, knowing that about 99.8% of companies are small and medium-sized, contributing very significantly to high levels of employability, it is extremely important to understand the role that people management assumes in these organizations, as well as which are the factors, both internal and external, that exert the greatest influence on them. Purpose: In this paper we investigate internal and external factors of small business likely to correlate with a more formal and structured human resource management. Study design/methodology/approach A conceptual model was defined through the literature on human resource management and its consistency was tested through three methodological steps (exploratory interviews; readjustment of variables with the Delphi method; multivariate statistical tests). From a survey of 186 smaller firms in Portugal, we tested conceptual model by structural equation modelling. Findings/conclusions: The analysis reveals that dimensions such as organizational structure, management and communication style, career management, organizational flexibility, organizational strategy and national culture are positively related to more formal and structured human resource management practices and policies. Limitations/future research: Due to its complexity, both at the level of the conceptual analysis and the empirical level, this study presents some limitations, namely, and among others, the complexity of the number of dimensions and variables under analysis, and the complexity of the model being tested. A broader line of research could include collecting data from employee. This analysis would allow for a different perspective of the company's procedures and would broaden some issues that are less detailed in this study.

However, if expatriation is a reality of international markets, over recent years, this concept has taken on different typologies, including self-initiated expatriation. Characterized by the individual initiative that encourages individuals to move beyond their national borders in search of an international work experience, it is critical to understand the phenomena related to SIE. More precisely, we aim to study the problematics of SIE, namely, when it started to be studied and who has published in this area of research, and the identification of the main types/sources of publication used to disseminate these works, as well as the main topics that, within the scope of SIE, have been studied. To answer these questions, using inf...

Studies on minorities have gained a lot of emphasis; however, about sexual minorities, these are still not very expressive, especially regarding the labor context. Although sexual orientation is not professionally related, homosexual workers still suffer discrimination, the impact of which is reflected in their health, wages, and job opportunities. Thus, workers may decide to limit the disclosure of their sexual orientation at work or to assume it, decisions that vary according to their working environments. Inclusive organizational environments and policies are relevant tools that organizations need to adopt, to create safety and happiness at work. To achieve the study aims, an ethnographic approach was taken. An interview guide was elaborated and interviews conducted with homosexual workers to analyze their realities and professional experiences. The results allow us to conclu...

The concept of sustainability is now a key factor, for business and society and for the environment as well. The question, which enters now, is how the concept of sustainability should be connected or implemented in human resource management. The existing literature shows the need for the emergence of a new concept: (sustainable human resource management). The discussion on the relationship, between sustainability and human resource management, admit more and more attention to be paid by academics and other specialists and professionals. It is commonly know that in any theoretical study, all factors should be taken into consideration, so as, a clear view, about the mentioned study, to be finally extracted. In this paper particular attention is paid, to draw the definitions and the evolution of the concepts of SD, CSR and HRM. The objective of this paper is to present the current theoretical approaches in the literature on: a) the classification and the description of the theoretical views on the concepts of CSR, SD and HRM b) put these concepts to the wider theoretical scope, so they became endeavor for alignment and consistency of them and c) finally to present the four models of Sustainable Human Resource Management that currently dominate the literature.

Knowledge Management and Learning Organizations
The present work assumes the concepts of organizational learning and knowledge management are rel... more The present work assumes the concepts of organizational learning and knowledge management are related, although not identical. Through literature review, we provide clarification on the specificities of each conceptual construct: even if the basic processes and objectives of knowledge management and organizational learning are mutual, we contend that knowledge management refers to a conceptual construct which primarily focuses on knowledge content, while organizational learning entails all aspects of data, information and knowledge. So, clear differences can be presented when comparatively analysing such conceptual constructs, which we summarized into five distinctive core vectors, operating at the level of the conceptual approach (interest of academics vs. interest of practitioners), the goal (process vs. result), the scope (system vs. subsystem), the agents (individual level vs. collective level) and the products (individual memory vs. organizational memory). Nonetheless, based on the common elements vividly detected, shared purposes are identified, once such notions jointly thrive towards enhanced information and knowledge that allow organizational behaviours, impelling on superior organizational performance, objectives which guide the solidification and the expansion of a knowledge value chain model able to incorporate and objectivize the basis for a framework towards the progress in knowledge management programs and in the enhancement of a learning organization.

For the success of the GDPR implementation to be a reality, it is important to guarantee the existence with an adequate level of performance, of a set of Critical Success Factors (CSF). This article is based on a work in progress, but with final results already available, that determined a set of 16 CSFs related to the implementation of the GDPR in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). One of these 16 CSFs highlights the importance of correctly managing change, being one of the most used models in this context including in HEIs, the 8-step organizational change model by Kotter . The Kotter's organizational change model is proposed in this study as a roadmap, to systematically carry out the change management related to the implementation of GDPR HEIs.

In other words, it looks to study and understand to what extent employees with leadership roles use their position to maximize CCAM performance through their direct intervention on the teams. Considering that both leaders and subordinates have their own aims (organizational/professional and personal, respectively), and in order to find the necessary equilibrium between them, it also seems to be relevant to better understand the way leaders can mobilize and support organizational subordinates. In sum, issues like leadership, motivation, satisfaction, and personal development are studied in this chapter.
