ABSTRACT The control of anthracnose (Colletotrichum simmondsii) during the post-harvest stage in ... more ABSTRACT The control of anthracnose (Colletotrichum simmondsii) during the post-harvest stage in guava fruits (Psidium guajava L.) was performed by the application of phosphites [phosphite-K (40% P2O5 and 30% K2O) and phosphite-Ca (10.7% P2O5, 3.89% Ca, and 0.5% B)] including the Carbendazim as reference, calcium chloride (CaCl2), acetyl salicylic acid (ASA), hot water (HW), and 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP). These treatments were applied individually or in combination each other with two or three compounds. The evaluated parameters were diameter of anthracnose lesion (DL), number of lesions (NL), and fruit quality (fresh weight loss, pH, total soluble solids, and titrable acidity]. The fruits were disinfested, inoculated, and maintained in an incubator containing fluorescent lights at 75 μmol·m-2 ·s-1 (25°C, 12h photoperiod) for 5 days and were then analyzed. The results showed that the DL and the NL were reduced following treatments, and that the HW (47°C for 20 min) was the strongest and the 1-MCP treatment was the least effective. The physico-chemical characteristics of fruits were affected by some treatments without compromising fruit quality. The combination of treatments was also able to alleviate the anthracnose effect on fruits compared to individual treatments and the control without affect the fruit quality. The combinations which included the HW treatment showed the best performance to control this disease, particularly when combined with the 1-MCP and phosphite.

RESUMO: A murcha bacteriana causada por Ralstonia solanacearum é considerada a principal doença d... more RESUMO: A murcha bacteriana causada por Ralstonia solanacearum é considerada a principal doença de origem bacteriana no mundo. Centenas de espécies de plantas pertencentes a mais de 50 famílias botânicas têm sido relatadas como hospedeiras. Foi avaliada, em condições de casa de vegetação, a colonização radicular de alface, arroz, cebolinha, ervilha, pepino e soja, por seis isolados de Ralstonia solanacearum (Rs), biovares 1, 2 e 3. Estirpes dos isolados de Rs com resistência múltipla aos antibióticos estreptomicina, rifampicina e cloranfenicol foram utilizadas. A colonização foi avaliada 45 dias após a inoculação, através do plaqueamento de suspensão de trituração em meio de cultura semi-seletivo. A ervilha comportou-se como hospedeira de todos os isolados mas, apenas um isolado da biovar 3 foi patogênico a esta espécie. A soja apresentou populações elevadas de quatro isolados distribuídos entre as três biovares e o pepino, de apenas dois isolados das biovares 1 e 3. Exceto para o isolado que foi patogênico à ervilha, as plantas não apresentaram sintomas da doença, comportando-se como hospedeiras não suscetível. O arroz apresentou populações muito baixas de todos os isolados. Alface e cebolinha não hospedaram nenhum dos isolados inoculados. Os resultados mostram a capacidade de Rs colonizar e sobreviver em diferentes espécies de plantas como rizobactérias. Root colonization of lettuce (Lactuca sativa), rice (Oryza sativa), spring onion (Allium fistulosum), pea (Pisum sativum), cucumber (Cucumis sativus), and soybean (Glycine max) by six isolates of Ralstonia solanacearum (Rs) biovars 1, 2 and 3 was evaluated under greenhouse conditions. Bacterial strains resistant to streptomycin, rifampicin and chloranfenicol were used. Root colonization was evaluated 45 days after inoculation by counting bacteria in root extracts of culture media with antibiotics. Pea plants hosted all six isolates, but only the isolate biovar 3 was pathogenic to this species. High populations of four isolates of the three biovars were found on soybean, and cucumber hosted high population of only two isolates (biovars 1 and 3). Pea was a non-susceptible host for Rs, except for one pathogenic isolate. Rice hosted very low populations of all isolates, while lettuce and spring onion did not host any isolates. These results showed the ability of Rs to colonize and survive on different plant roots as rhizobacteria.

Xiphidorus amazonensis n. sp. was found in the rhizospheres of Jatropha curcas, Musa sp., Anona m... more Xiphidorus amazonensis n. sp. was found in the rhizospheres of Jatropha curcas, Musa sp., Anona muricata, Cassia tora, Panicum laxum, Paspalum fasciculatum, Aeschynomene sensitiva, Saccharum officinarum, Manihot esculenta, Abelmoschus esculentus, Tamarindus indica, Mangifera indica, Vigna unguiculata, Zea mays, Commelina sp., Cyperus rotundus, Fimbristylis miliacea, Citrus sinensis, and Eichhornia crassipes on the Amazon River island of Xiborena, approximately 40 km southeast of Manaus, capital of the State of Amazonas. The type habitat is flooded annually for about 6 months by the Amazon River. Xiphidorus amazonensis n. sp. differs from the closely related species Xiphidorus yepesara Monteiro, 1976 by the larger size, by a, b, and c values, and by the rounded tail terminus. RESUMO -A resistência induzida é um método alternativo de controle de doenças. Entretanto, há pou... more RESUMO -A resistência induzida é um método alternativo de controle de doenças. Entretanto, há poucos estudos relacionando o uso destes produtos e outros métodos alternativos à produtividade das plantas e às características físicas e químicas dos frutos. Objetivou-se avaliar a severidade de doenças, as características físicas e químicas de frutos e a produtividade de plantas tratadas com produtos alternativos e fertilizantes foliares. Plantas de maracujazeiro BRS Gigante Amarelo clonadas, em campo, foram submetidas, por um ano, a pulverizações quinzenais com: água (testemunha), Cuprozeb ® (fungicida-padrão), acibenzolar-Smetil -ASM, Agro-mos ® , fosfito de potássio, fosetyl-Al, gesso agrícola e CPAC-GE (produto em teste). O delineamento foi o em blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições e 20 frutos por repetição. Para o estudo da produtividade, utilizaram-se quatro repetições e seis plantas úteis por parcela. As colheitas ocorreram de novembro/2008 a abril/2009. As severidades foram avaliadas com escala de notas. Houve redução da severidade da virose, verrugose e bacteriose em todos os tratamentos, com exceção do Cuprozeb ® para virose. Não foi observada redução da antracnose. Frutos com maior massa fresca foram obtidos com aplicações de gesso agrícola (236,83 g), CPAC-GE (234,10 g), fosetyl-Al (233,79 g), fosfito de potássio (230,64 g) e Agromos ® (221,15 g). Os mesmos resultados foram observados para diâmetro transversal e massa de polpa. Não houve diferenças significativas entre tratamentos para diâmetro longitudinal e espessura de casca. Quanto às características químicas dos frutos, com exceção do Cuprozeb ® , que não diferiu significativamente da testemunha, todos os produtos proporcionaram incremento no teor de sólidos solúveis. Maior acidez titulável foi obtida com Cuprozeb ® , gesso agrícola, Agro-mos ® , fosetyl-Al e ASM. Não foi constatada alteração no pH dos frutos. Em relação à produtividade, maiores quantidades de frutos por planta foram obtidas com fosfito de potássio (162,38 frutos), seguido pelo gesso agrícola (111,13 frutos) e CPAC-GE (102,50 frutos). Maiores produtividades (kg/ha), considerando 1.600 plantas/ha, foram alcançadas com fosfito de potássio (40,19 t/ha), seguido pelo gesso agrícola (30,48 t/ha) e CPAC-GE (29,04 t/ha). Bacterial canker, caused by Xanthomonas campestris pv. viticola, affects grapevines in the irriga... more Bacterial canker, caused by Xanthomonas campestris pv. viticola, affects grapevines in the irrigated areas of the São Francisco river valley, in the states of Pernambuco and Bahia. Several practices for disease management have been adopted including copper sprays. This is the only available chemical control method and most frequently used in the areas affected by the disease. The objective of this work was to determine the sensitivity to copper of strains of X. campestris pv. viticola collected in different locations and over a period of years, from 1998 to 2006. Variation in sensitivity to copper oxychloride and copper sulfate was observed among the 21 strains tested. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) varied from 10 to 60 μg/mL Cu 2+ , for both compounds. A general increase in copper tolerance over the years was also observed, with the Brazilian strains being more tolerant than the type-strain, collected in 1972 in India. The differences observed in copper sensitivity may lead to the selection and dominance of the more tolerant strains in the bacterial population as copper compounds continue to be used in the region.
