This study aimed to identify children who have chest wall deformity, the prevalence of deformity,... more This study aimed to identify children who have chest wall deformity, the prevalence of deformity, and the factors affecting the psychological and physical disorders caused by the deformity. The study was conducted among 14,108 girls and boys aged 11-14 years, who were 5th-8th grade secondary school students in Ankara Province between October 2014 and March 2015. Results: Of the 14,108 students in our study, the mean age of the children was 12.53 ± 1.11 years (median 12.54, 11-14 years) and chest wall deformity was detected in 199 (1.41%) students. Male/female and pectus carinatum/pectus excavatum ratios were 2.16 and 1.59, respectively. According to multivariate logistic regression analysis, physical disturbance was found to be statistically significantly higher among children in age group 11 [adjusted OR (95% CI) =16.01 (1.89-135.61), P < 0.011] and in children who were aware of the deformity [adjusted OR (95% CI) = 0.31 (0.13-0.71), P < 0.006], and psychological disturbance was found to be statistically significantly higher in girls [adjusted OR (95% CI) = 15.44 (1.68-141.59), P < 0.015] and in those with a presence of family history [adjusted OR (95% CI) = 18.66 (1.92-181.60), P < 0.012]. In this study conducted in a large population, chest wall deformities were found to be more prevalent in boys (0.96%) and pectus carinatum was found as the most common deformity type in our country, contrary to the literature.
Aim: This study was designed to examine the applications of geriatric patients aged 80 and over t... more Aim: This study was designed to examine the applications of geriatric patients aged 80 and over to emergency service for trauma and non-traumatic reasons and to evaluate the relationship between those findings and the restrictions applied due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Material and Method: A total of 111 patients over the age of 80, including 49 patients who were directed from the emergency room to thoracic surgery due to thoracic trauma and 62 patients who were referred to thoracic surgery for non-traumatic reasons, were included in the study between March 2020 and March 2021. Results: During the pandemic period in question, it was found that female patients were admitted to the emergency department due to trauma statistically significantly more often while male patients were more often admitted to the emergency department for non-traumatic reasons (p=0.021). It was furthermore found that 22 (44.9%) of the 49 patients who presented with trauma were hospitalized, while 10 (16.1%) of the 62 patients who presented for non-traumatic reasons were hospitalized (p=0.001). We know that the course of disease of many patients, especially patients with malignancies, continues to progress with the frequent occurrence of chronic diseases or diseases with asymptomatic and progressive characteristics in the geriatric population. At the same time, pandemic restrictions may cause difficulties in reaching the hospital. For this reason, we advise that the geriatric population, especially older geriatric patients, not delay hospital visits in the face of any other pandemic-related restrictions that may be applied. The general public should also be made aware of this issue. Otherwise, the social inactivity imposed as a result of such pandemic-related restrictions may increase the mortality rate among geriatric patients due to chronic diseases or neoplasias far beyond the mortality rate that occurs due to the pandemic itself.

Our first case is a 24-year-old male patient who was admitted with a cystic mass lesion consistent with hydatid cyst which was incidentally detected in inferior lobe of the right lung neighboring to thoracic wall and diaphragm. Our second case is a 32-year-old male patient who was admitted with chest pain and a cystic lesion in apex of the right hemithorax and intercostal field in basal after he had been medically treated due to hydatid cyst of the dome of the liver for two years. The cysts were removed with thoracotomy. Extrapulmonary intrathoracic hydatid cysts were evaluated with regard to invasion ways and treatment indications and methods.

Even if basosquamous cell carcinoma is conceded a variant of basaloid cell carcinoma, it has a higher metastatic potential than basaloid cell carcinoma. There is no publication which evaluates metastasectomy of the pulmonary metastases of basosquamous cell carcinoma. In this study a 67 year old male patient, who had been operated on for basosquamous cell carcinoma on the skin of his nose and also underwent right thoracotomy and wedge resection for the metastatic lesion on his right lung after resection of the primary tumour, was presented in the light of the current literature because of its rarity. We present a 57-year-old woman who has a giant mediastinal goiter, which lies down from cervical ... more We present a 57-year-old woman who has a giant mediastinal goiter, which lies down from cervical zone to right posterior mediastinum. On physical examination mediastinal goiter was nonpalpable. Giant mediastinal goiter was removed by right lateral thoracotomy, cervical collar incision and partial sternotomy. Pathology was reported as a multinodular goiter. We cannot perform VATS (video-assisted thoracoscopy) due to tight adhesion of the pleura. With the difference of literature partial sternotomy can be added to the transcervical and lateral thoracotomy approach for ease of removing giant posterior mediastinal goiters which lie down left cervical to the right posterior mediastinum.
Aim: This study aimed to investigate the competency of residents and interns in diagnosing pneumo... more Aim: This study aimed to investigate the competency of residents and interns in diagnosing pneumothorax on chest radiography (CXR) as well as to identify potential areas requiring training on this subject. Materials and Methods: A case set including a total of 40 chest radiographies that were in the digital imaging and communications in medicine (DICOM) format were loaded to the DICOM-compatible software tool-Viewer for Digital Evaluation of X-ray images (ViewDEX). Fifty-three observers, including 25 residents and 28 interns, interpreted the images by answering all the questions determined for each case. Results: The overall accuracy rate to diagnose pneumothorax on CXR was 79% in the study cohort, with 79.5% and 78.6% for residents and interns, respectively. No significant difference was observed between residents and interns when compared in terms of accuracy rates (regardless of the residents' specialties; p=0.600). When the residents' specialties were considered, the diagnostic accuracy rate was found to be significantly different between the groups (p<0.05). Conclusion: The results of our study in terms of the overall accuracy rates of residents and interns in pneumothorax diagnosis on CXR are comparable to the previous studies in literature. However, comparison to another national study was not feasible due to the lack of published studies on this topic in Turkey. We believe that our study may serve as a starting point by raising the awareness on the subject and promote further studies in our country.

Background The aim of this study was to evaluate the results of R0 resection of thymoma to identi... more Background The aim of this study was to evaluate the results of R0 resection of thymoma to identify prognostic factors for long-term outcomes. Methods Data of 62 patients (28 male, 34 female) with a mean age of 47.26 ± 14.42 years, who underwent R0 resection for thymoma and were followed-up between February 2004 and March 2016, were analyzed retrospectively. Results Eight patients had a video-assisted thoracoscopic thymectomy and 54 had a transsternal extended thymectomy. During a mean follow-up of 128.67 ± 7.95 months, regional recurrence of thymoma was observed in 9 (14.5%) patients. Overall 5- and 10-year survival rates were 85.36% and 78.20%, respectively. The 5- and 10-year survival rates in patients aged < 50 years were significantly better than in those aged ≥ 50 years (92% and 72% vs. 88% and 39%, p < 0.0001). The 10-year overall survival of patients in Masaoka stage I and II was better than those in stage III (88.9%, 78.4%, 69.8%, respectively, log-rank p < 0.001)....
We modified the Onen method for pectus carinatum repair and used a vertical incision instead of a... more We modified the Onen method for pectus carinatum repair and used a vertical incision instead of a transverse incision. The most important advantage gained by the vertical incision is that we can switch to the Ravitch method without needing an additional incision, by elongating the existing incision in patients in whom a pectus bar cannot be placed. We successfully performed the modified Onen technique in a 16-year-old boy with a mixed-type pectus carinatum deformity.

A 40-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with lung herniation due to falling off a donkey. Computed tomography demonstrated a fracture of the 8th left rib, a comminuted fracture of the 9th rib, and lung herniation into the 8th intercostal space. The herniation was repaired using a titanium prosthetic rib, a rib plate, and Prolene mesh via a thoracotomy.

According to multivariate logistic regression analysis, physical disturbance was found to be statistically significantly higher among children in age group 11 [adjusted OR (95% CI) =16.01 (1.89-135.61), P < 0.011] and in children who were aware of the deformity [adjusted OR (95% CI) = 0.31 (0.13-0.71), P < 0.006], and psychological disturbance was found to be statistically significantly higher in girls [adjusted OR (95% CI) = 15.44 (1.68-141.59), P < 0.015] and in those with a presence of family history [adjusted OR (95% CI) = 18.66 (1.92-181.60), P < 0.012]. Conclusion: In this study conducted in a large population, chest wall deformities were found to be more prevalent in boys (0.96%) and pectus carinatum was found as the most common deformity type in our country, contrary to the literature.
Background The aim of this study was to evaluate the results of R0 resection of thymoma to identi... more Background The aim of this study was to evaluate the results of R0 resection of thymoma to identify prognostic factors for long-term outcomes. Methods Data of 62 patients (28 male, 34 female) with a mean age of 47.26 ± 14.42 years, who underwent R0 resection for thymoma and were followed-up between February 2004 and March 2016, were analyzed retrospectively. Results Eight patients had a video-assisted thoracoscopic thymectomy and 54 had a transsternal extended thymectomy. During a mean follow-up of 128.67 ± 7.95 months, regional recurrence of thymoma was observed in 9 (14.5%) patients. Overall 5- and 10-year survival rates were 85.36% and 78.20%, respectively. The 5- and 10-year survival rates in patients aged < 50 years were significantly better than in those aged ≥ 50 years (92% and 72% vs. 88% and 39%, p < 0.0001). The 10-year overall survival of patients in Masaoka stage I and II was better than those in stage III (88.9%, 78.4%, 69.8%, respectively, log-rank p < 0.001)....
We modified the Onen method for pectus carinatum repair and used a vertical incision instead of a... more We modified the Onen method for pectus carinatum repair and used a vertical incision instead of a transverse incision. The most important advantage gained by the vertical incision is that we can switch to the Ravitch method without needing an additional incision, by elongating the existing incision in patients in whom a pectus bar cannot be placed. We successfully performed the modified Onen technique in a 16-year-old boy with a mixed-type pectus carinatum deformity.

A 40-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with lung herniation due to falling off a donkey. Computed tomography demonstrated a fracture of the 8th left rib, a comminuted fracture of the 9th rib, and lung herniation into the 8th intercostal space. The herniation was repaired using a titanium prosthetic rib, a rib plate, and Prolene mesh via a thoracotomy.
