In the play, Correia portrays the society of Gal, a fictional city that witnesses the rise of a new saint among its residents, Santa Melânia, an event created to protect the young woman's secret affair with the local priest. While being worshiped by the people, Melânia is transformed into Pupi, the prostitute, excluded from the community in order to preserve the religious farce. These two faces of the main character will serve as a basis for our analysis of the feminine and its association with the religious context of the play. As a theoretical contribution, we will base our work on authors who explore the social evolution of women both in the historiographic and mythological realms, such as BARING and CASHFORD (2005), BATAILLE (1987), CAMPBELL (1976) and WHITMONT (1991).
Abstract: This paper presents an analysis about eroticism and carnivalization in the work Cain (2009), by José Saramago. Based on the work of Bakhtin (1996), about the carnivalization; Bataille (1987) about eroticism; and Whitmont (1991) as a basis theory for the feminine, the work is developed exploiting the parody of the sacred text and sexuality in the development of the sacred characters, focusing on two main female characters, Eve and Lilith. Sexuality, which is presented as a way of empowering characters, and the appreciation of the human body, at the expense of religious dogma prevailing in patriarchal societies, and carnal instincts, which in the case of the relationship between the queen Lilith and the fratricide, verging the animalistic, challenge not only the Christian and Jewish traditions, but also the foundations of patriarchal cultures that until modern times have power over much of society, influencing and shaping behavior to their said superiors standards.
