First, we present the types of discourse units most commonly used for the linguistic description ... more First, we present the types of discourse units most commonly used for the linguistic description of sign languages (beyond specific terminologies): lexical signs, classifier constructions and role shifts in particular. Then, after having briefly outlined our theoretical approach, the Semiological approach, we report on the types of units proposed by this approach, namely, in addition to pointing units and fingerspellling units, these two main types, lexical units and transfer units. This finally allows us to explain, from detailed examples, the types of difficulties we encounter in our ELAN annotations, which are linked in particular to the basic principle of a gloss-based notation. These examples, representative of our French Sign Language (LSF) corpora, are problematic because of the interweaving of unit types, their multilinearity and the complexity of discursive constructions. These difficulties attest to the need for a means of annotating relevant elements at an infra-unit level.

In this paper, we consider the lexical structure in French Sign Language (LSF), a language withou... more In this paper, we consider the lexical structure in French Sign Language (LSF), a language without its own writing system, aside from the simplistic representation provided in so-called dictionaries that follow a list of entries in written French. According to our working hypothesis, the sublexical components in LSF are systematically meaning-bearing (although traditionally considered as phonemic), as the lexicon is not limited to "word-signs"; this view is commonly held in sections of the linguistic literature on sign language. We present here initial results of ongoing studies conducting a cross-analysis of corpora (one dictionary corpus and two corpora of signed discourse by deaf signers of LSF discussing metalinguistic topics). The analysis confirms our hypothesis, converging on a fine-grained structuring of LSF lexicon, into families of signs clustered around a form-meaning core of sub-lexical constituents containing one to three parametric components. The long-term prospects of our research involve the identification of the sublexical components of LSF and their combinations, and on a theoretical level, analysis of their linguistic status, in morphological terms in particular.

Drawing on previous and ongoing research, we propose that the development of a written form appears to be necessary for defining more appropriate representational tools for research purposes.

La presentation expose la structure d'une base de donnees du lexique standard de la LSF regro... more La presentation expose la structure d'une base de donnees du lexique standard de la LSF regroupant les composants parametriques et morphemiques. Ses principaux objectifs sont d'une part de valider l'hypothese de C. Cuxac d'une compositionnalite morphemique et, d'autre part, d'etablir la liste des elements graphematiques susceptibles d'etre retenus pour l'elaboration d'une forme graphique de la LSF. Le fait que plusieurs valeurs morphemiques existent pour chaque valeur parametrique interroge sur leurs differenciations formelles (niveau infra parametrique). Cette prise en compte dans la base de donnees oblige a eclater le referentiel egocentre des parametres en une collection de referentiels allocentres articulaires. La recomposition de cet ensemble distribue dessine des liens d'interdependance entre les parametres qui seront abordes ici.
