This orientation directs the therapist's behavior and extrapolation toward: viewing symptoms as family metaphors; speaking the family's choice of metaphor in a way which addresses both change and stability aspects of their ecology; the importance of achieving explicit digitalized contracts; assessing the cyclical sequence surrounding the presenting problem through an emphasis on behavioral assignments; and avoiding addiction to the context of therapy.

We argue that being principally organized by any therapeutic model-whether it advocates a postmodern, narrative, systemic, or other view-maintains the hegemony not of only a singular form of interpretation, but of interpretation itself. We suggest the practical shift intended by systemic and cybernetic contributions to the field involved its implicit encouragement of an always readyto-change therapy, creatively guided by interactivity rather than allegiance to any habituated form.

He kept a rifle next to his bed, the same rifle he used to brutalize her, the same rifle used to shoot up her mothers home, and the same rifle he showed the sheriff’s deputy as he and the deputy drank beer after she had made a domestic abuse call in the early 1970s, her last call to the authorities. He had ruptured her colon with a kick, had tattooed his name near her genitalia, and had threatened her mother with rape if she tried to help.
